I recorded a viola for a theatre project. I recorded it in a dry room, close mic with a neumann tlm103. Some samples are just noises of the bow on the c or d string, then once in a while creating overtones, other samples contain some processing with echoboy by soundtoys. Amazing plugins they make!. Specifically, a middle ground between 13 equal divisions of a tritave (interval 3/1) and the just-intonation bohlen—pierce scale. (for no particular reason. ). Convolving with this might add some xen flavor to your sounds, even if you play in standard tuning 12edo. I tried it with surge xt’s hammered dulcimer patch (i love hammered dulcimer!) and heard some additional shimmering.

Double bass bowed harmonics. Bass played by houston guy, recorded with a shure ksm44, 24bit mono. I was producing a song and asked mr. Guy to give me some noisy strangness just to layer in for texture and he performed admirably.

Took a violin bow to a chinese guzheng and the results were pretty great. Good for ambience, drones and creepy stuff. Recorded with blue spark and blue bluebird condenser mics through a scarlett 6i6 interface. Uncut with a small glue compressor to minimize spikes.
