Az orosz zöld első feljegyzett használata színnévként angolul az 1830-as években történt (a pontos évszám bizonytalan). Úgy tűnik, hogy a kifejezés a zöld közepes árnyalatára utal, amelyet a császári orosz hadsereg legtöbb ezrede viselt 1700-tól 1914-ig.
