This, my dear friend, is ils - infinitely loud silence. Play some other sounds and then play this, and you'll know why i call it this way. It's created by a bug present in lmms, a free program for electronic music production. Actually this sample can't reproduce the ils phenomenon, that creates a dc offset so big, that it outnumbers any other signal getting out of the same audio interface and the result is silence. It's a silence that is masking other sounds. Mind-boggling. Nasty bug. All this sound can do is cause some distortion, probably because 24-bit sound can be only as loud as 0db. 32-bit floating point should be able to get louder, but still i don't think any sample file would be able to reproduce this product of error.

Most of this recording is of insects in a special field of native wildflowers at a dog-park on south mountain reservation in new jersey. Near the beginning of the recording, you can hear, in the distance, a dog at the dog park yelping in pain very loudly, perhaps after receiving a bite from another dog. The rest of the recording is pure ambience, except for a plane (newark airport isn't far off). ---two primo em172 capsules -> zoom h1.

A peaceful, droning, relaxing summer soundscape of the midwestern forest. For starters, in the background you hear a river of wind steadily swirling around the oaks, and the maples and the sycamore trees. A blessed northeast wind-friend. The insects take over, and on top of that, a single, solitary bird, i think a flycatcher, softly calls his one-note. Even though this is the time of year that the visitors, those beautiful neo-tropical migrants, fill the woods, after several months of raising of raising a family, they are quiet, resting now. . . Letting the insects signify the passage of time and the slow march to autumn. In about 6 weeks from now, most of our visitors will have left. . . Back down south, their job of raising the next crop of insect-eaters done. . . And the woods, the forest, the nearly-dry creekbed will be packing it in. A technical problem i had with my technics stereo cassette desk rs-5 where playback would deliver this fading squarewave at maximum volume. Apparently, it could have been an issue with the tape header wearing out. Thought i might as well upload it here, as i'm not sure anyone will be able to create this sound again. Note, this sound was de-amplifiied by 10 db in audacity 3. 1. 3. Simply put, the raw file was incredibly loud. If you're curious enough, you can increase it back up to its original volume, though i wouldn't advise it.
