I was driving past a back burning (bush fire control burn) and pulled over to a quite place. I could hear quite crackling and birds chirping.

In this recording, about 80 people are learning or playing mah jong while the restaurant kitchen closes service and the sound system is off. There are adults and a few small children in the room and too many djs (common problem here). This is a snippet of perth's majestic bird life. The birds that feature in this recording are black cockatoos, and it was taken at the kensington bushland reserve at dusk. These birds are tribal, have incredible energy, and are extremely communicative, and hearing them squawk is one of my favourite parts of living here.

The monsoon rain has set in for now. It is constant. Last night it became heavy around midnight and was relentless all night until around dawn. In the early hours of the morning the only sound is the rain.

One of the greatest inspirations is other people. A couple of friends bagging someone out and making a track at the same time outside a pub.
