Here in illinois, where we have a mandatory, stay at home order, the sounds of the morning winds and birds seem lonely. . . This was recorded on sunday march 29th, 2020. Usually this time of morning would also feature, people walking and talking on the sidewalk, more car traffic and church bells. . . . Recorded with the zoom f-4 recorder. The microphone was a sennheiser mkh-8060 literally pointed nearly straight up at a budding tulip poplar tree. The dominant feature is the constant river of whooshing wind. . . . . Seemingly underscoring the plight that is upon us.

Rode nt4 -> maudio delta1010lt, capturing a lightning strike that made the walls of my house shake, and forced me to turn off my computer. The lightning occured ~167 meters away from the microphone, calculated from the time lapse between the initial dc spike and the start of audible strike. Clipped quite a bit, had the input slightly too high, but did not expect one to hit so close. A picture hanging on my wall shook violently when this one hit. Interesting (but painful) sounds made with a zoom h2 (front mics, low gain) connected to a laptop via usb. The signal was piped to old creative sbs250 spekers with 16ms of latency (i'm using jack audio connection kit and linux). That's how my feedback loop came into existance. I turned up the volume and started to move the mics around, geting a lot of different sounds ranginf from simple tones to strange lfoish sounds. The sound touches 0db one times, but is rather undistorted (at least digitally). Recorded with audacity @ 48khz/16-bit and saved as flac.

This was a recording taken on a small train riding around the louisville zoo in kentucky, usa. I took this towards the end of the tour, and was on the back of the train so you can hear the announcer quite clearly directing us. Sorry if there’s some talking in the background, i was siting next to my aunt’s little foster child at the time and he was enjoying himself quite a bit. While the sound quality is somewhat poor, the lyrics used here are likely nearer that sung in Yip Yip Yaphank than the standard ones given in the sheet music, making it useful. I had a little job which involved a cat drinking. . But first i had to record the bowl being put down. . . I placed the bowl down a few times - captured with correct room sound required. . I sold my giant couch, and two professional movers came to pick it up. Before they moved it, they whipped out a huge roll of clear plastic, and expertly passed it around and around the sofa until the whole thing was wrapped. The noise the wrapping made was astonishingly loud and echoey in our place, and sounded very. . . Uh. . . Science fiction-y. Recorded on my samsung note 20 phone, and some movers' mumbles included, so not desperately high quality -- but maybe someone can use part of it for a wizard rending the space time continuum with a sharpened wormhole, or some such. :-).

Lazer sound. I made this lazer sound with the use of operator in ableton as well as adding a few effects to help round it out. I started with a basic sine wave and then began to adjust the frequency range to cut out some of the low end of the sound and enhance the high end to make it more realistic and movie accurate. I also had to shorten the decay time so it is more of a short zap sound than a prolonged note. Another step was giving it an initial high pitched sound and this was achieved by having the sound start higher up the scale with semitones and then dropping down giving the effect of shooting and something traveling from the source sound.

A horrible sound for a contest, created by paulstretching the sound of an old photo-slide scanner six times, then slowly layering it on top of itself up by a semitone every second and adding reverb. Please comment on where you intend to use the sound, and feel free to post a link to the work where you used it if you want (i enjoy watching/listening to anything you create!). This is my recreation of the noise in the background of a video shot on a consumer grade minidv camcorder (a well used one). I haven't had a minidv camcorder on hand for a few years and nobody i knew would give me a recording of just tape motor noise so i went to create the noise myself. This sound is a combination of a very badly pressed dvd in my computer's drive mixed with a tone made in audacity (up one octave from the tone that the disc ended up creating), all mixed down and brought down in volume. I know it's not a prefect recreation, but i don't have a minidv camcorder on hand so this is about as good as i can get it. If anyone has access to an anechoic chamber, a fresh tape, and a well used consumer grade minidv camcorder, please get in touch with me. I'd like the real deal better than my recreation that i did in my spare time. Note on recreating the noise out of hdv camcorders. They have slightly different hardware and as such will create different bearing noise (most times, there's an extra whine on top of the familiar bearing whine heard from standard dv camcorders). I forget the exact frequency, but it's somewhere in the neighborhood of 840hz-860hz and it's a sort of sine wave, but a modest bit more jagged. You'll have to provide your own stock camcorder mic hiss as each camcorder is different (not for definite sure on sony camcorders, but canon camcorders have a pink-ish white noise in about that era).
