Zoom h4n - onboard microphones. This recording was captured in the city of orange in orange county, california. This is located just below los angeles and less than a mile from disneyland in anaheim. This is an extremely clean recording of a sudden cloudburst that turned in to a torrential downpour on december 28, 2020. The peaks are all very close to 0db. I opened the sliding glass door to our balcony and placed my zoom h4n as close as possible to the rain without destroying the recorder. What resulted is an amazingly layered rain track. This is because rain can be heard striking multiple surfaces such as a tree, a metal table, the cement balcony, etc. . . There is not much thunder (that's rare in this area) but if you need a few dramatic thunder claps they can be found at the following times one the file is downloaded. 5 1/2 minute recording using zoom h6 recorder of a storm front that passed through cincinnati on 4/9/2020 (which included 4 smaller f0 tornadoes). Made up of 3 segments put together. First segment (0:00) is rain and hail, second segment (1:20) includes tornado warning siren going off with one very loud thunder just before it shuts down, final segment (4:40) is rain and wind.

This is the raw recording straight from my zoom h5. Levels were kept low to minimize the chance of clipping. A few thunder sounds were still too loud, but luckily the h5 has a backup function that recorded an identical track 12 db quieter. I've uploaded that as well, so you can splice the two together to taste. Eventually i'll release a processed version with the two combined, plus compression and eq, but i wanted to upload the source material in case you'd prefer to diy it.
