This sound is piece of night atmosphere i recorded years ago with reel-to-reel nagra4 and mkh416. You can hear night ambience of large hangar with lot of silent insects flying directly to electronic trap light and burn in very close detail. Another detail sound comes from hiting the metal body of film light.

We got wood brought to our house from our woodman, and we brought a few armloads inside because we are already building fires. In the middle of the night, the woodbin started to make a strange noise. I figured it is some sort of bark chewing insect, but i have not seen it yet.

I made this wonderful recording in july 2011 at about 9:00 at night on a hot, muggy july evening. This is the time of year when the insect chorus can get very, very loud. Pretty amazing volume for such small insects. The really loud ones seem to reside in the trees and not on the ground. Recorder used: zoom h4n recorder using its built-in stereo microphones.

Fascinating to contemplate how, while us humans are sleeping soundly, preparing for our next day, nature, is performing this nightly chorus, under cover of darkness. The beautiful, simple call of the field cricket is one of my favorite insect sounds. In late summer though the huge choruses of katydids and cicadas often drown out the simple beauty of this love song. Later, as the season progresses into fall and the temps dip to where the cicadas and katydids no longer sing, these simple, beautiful field cricket calls still last up to the time that the days just can't stay warm any longer. I like to see how late into the season i can hear these guys---something just hauntingly mesmerizing hearing this sound and no other on a mild autumn day, after a cold night. . I was fortunate enough to capture this recording on september 4th 2013 in my backyard. Recording made around 4:30 in the morning with my h4n recorder using its internal built-in microphones.

Short field recordings made with my iphone in august 2013 while visiting family on one of the many small residential islands located in beaufort, south carolina (of forrest gump, the prince of tides, the big chill, and the great santini fame for any movie buffs out there). The loud buzzing is the ear-piercing mating call of the cicada insect, a sound that's hard to escape in the sultry summer months and semi-tropical environment of the south carolina low country. You can also hear tree frogs and i think maybe some birds too. Unfortunately there's also a little ambient whine of an air conditioner at times and me tip-toeing quietly around on the crunchy gravel dirt road. . . Because i didn't realize my iphone would do such a good job of picking up the sound of my footsteps. :).
