The peaceful natural recording was made in early march of 2012 in woods bordering a lake. Even though it was late-winter/early spring and was cold -- about 38 degrees -- it was not totally still. These tufted titmice and song sparrows were actively singing as if to say "hey, winter's almost gone, get ready for spring. An interesting recording of birds, led by blue jays, doing their alarm calls. I was in the middle of the woods when i noticed that the birds seemed to be alarmed like there was a predator nearby and sure enough, i finally spotted a big barred owl sitting high in a tree about 50 yards from my recorder. This wood thrush was recorded around 7:30 in the morning in heavy woods in deep southern illinois. Unlike my earlier posting of the wood thrush singing at dusk, this morning recording has the wood thrush singing with lots of company, although he clearly rises above his neighbors. 17 seconds into the recording you hear the drumming of a woodpecker, and at one-minute 20 seconds into the recording you hear the distinctive-lonely sounding call of the huge pileated woodpecker.
