This is the song of a beautiful bird called a rufous-sided towhee. A bird usually found in deep woods, or in heavy brush. I was fortunate though to both see and hear this guy as he was perched in a tree at the edge of a heavy forest. Recorded around 6:30 in the morning on a gorgeous spring day on the last day of march 2012. Rode ntg-2 shotgun mic mounted on a sturdy tripod to reduce handling noise. Enjoy!.

I found this wonderful 4 foot high waterfall in a small canyon in the shawnee national forest in southern illinois. The cool splashing of the rivulet as it spilled out onto a catch-pool was enhanced by the echo as the sound bounced off the 3-sided grotto. Recorded on one of the hottest days of august 2011 using my rode ntg-2 shotgun mic into zoom h4n recorder.

A nice spring soundscape of birds in deep woods. I set my recorder on a sand-bar in the middle of a nice-sized creek, turned on the internal mics on my zoom h4n and just let nature do the talking. Recorded around 11 in the morning on a cloudy 71 degree day.

Wide-range atmo of the little swiss mountain village of breitenfeld. The cows have come down from pasture and are standing at the gated bridge to the village, waiting to be let in to be milked. Recorded with a zoom h2 at 90° dispersion.

A peaceful medium-sized creek in the midwest. At 41 seconds into the recording, in the left channel you will faintly hear some walkers casually strolling by on this brisk 35 degree day. Then, at 1:45 into the recording, some light bird callsadd to this peaceful recording. Recording made in the shawnee national forest in southern illinois in late december of 2018. A hot summer afternoon in the swedish forest/mountains. Recorded with zoom h5 (xy) outside the cabin i rented. Recording mostly consists of birds and general life from people moving/talking as they arrive to their cabins with family. Its intended to represent a peaceful vibe with some human presence. I decided to not remove much movement/actions from the people such post because i felt it might suck out the soul of the recording. In post: in pro tools i removed some low rumble, and and trimmed the highs just a little bit. Added a "pro expander" to lower some noise, both generated by the h5 and the location. Ps. I have a version with 2 dpa 4060 in a ab stereo fashion of the same recording, abit noisy but its on my profile if you want to listen. Hope you like it.

A peaceful, drowsy-ish recording of a midwestern usa large field bordered by heavy forest. This was recorded in mid summer, on a very hot day. Temperature was 90 degrees, but, with 45% humidity it was manageable. The good thing about this recording is i was far enough away from humanity's engines to get no cars, no boats, no loud. . . . Anything. Well, except the insect chorus. This is the time of year in illinois that autumn is getting imperceptibly closer. The skies are clearer blue with less humidity. . . A few trees had red leaves. Nature taking a breather. Recorded at 2:30pm on thursday august 26, 2022 using a mixpre 6 recorder. Left channel: rode nt5 cardioid microphone. Right channel: sennheiser mkh 416 microphone.

These are the church bells from the st. Johannes nepomuk church in kehl a. Rhein. It's from a village on the german side of the french city, strasbourg. It was recorded with a tascam pcm recorder 19. 08. 2012.

Another recording of one of my favorite fall soundscapes featuring cottonwood leaves "shimmering", the lonely call of a blue jay and the soft sound of insects singing a little more quiet than they do in the warmer temps of summer. Recorded using my zoom h4-n recorder, and the famous sm57 microphone.

A recording done in late october of several years ago featuring the crisp sound of the leaves of a giant cottonwood tree being brushed by fall breezes. The sound of a lonely blue-jay really adds to this soundscape. Recorder used: handy zoom h4-n with internal microphones.

One of my favorite sounds is that of leaves skittering across a street on a crisp fall day. . . This, however, is elusive and tricky to record. However, here is a recording that i made this past friday october 19th, 2012 in a small town in southern illinois. It's not perfect, but i'm happy with it. A recording made in the shawnee national forest in illinois on the very first day of october, 2022. This recording was made at mid-afternoon and features the peaceful, pleasant wind through the deciduous trees. From time to time though, the soft call of a nuthatch or a chickadee reminds us there is still bird life in the early autumn woods. Birds getting ready, getting stocked up for the upcoming northern assaults of cold air this winter. Some crows really start to put on a show towards the end of this stereo recording. Recorded in stereo using a zoom f4 recorder. Microphones:left channel- neumann km184right channel - audio technica bp4025.

A late summer soundscape that is a favorite of mine. . Microphones set up in some mature woods about 60 feet from a large lake on labor day weekend. Most of the background is the insects, which are very obvious during this time of year. The swelling of their volume is nap-inducing (*at least to me in my opinion. )here is the midwest this swelling and subsiding of the insect wave tells me that summer is just about starting to go back downhill, after a feverish peak. Despite the covid-19 of the year, nature does not seem to have changed her soundscape. Life goes on in the forests. The birds, whose job of raising young is over, are still there. . . They're just resting and relaxing and listening to the insects as well i'm sure. Now of course you will hear a few prominent birds in this captured moment:(1) a great blue heron squawks out starting at 1:17 into this piece. (2) the alarm call of a red-headed woodpecker can be heard at 2:14. Other than that, just the insects singing their hearts out and the assortment of birds taking secondary place during this time of year. This was recorded on sunday september 6th 2020 at 8:30 in the morning in the forest in southern illinois. Equipment: zoom f4, microphone: sennheiser mkh 8060. Enjoy this audio snapshot of the subdued -- yet vibrant - sound color of late summer, finding comfort in the fact that, within four weeks, the colors of the leaves will be changing to oranges and reds and yellows. But, for now, there is still life to live in the insect and bird world.

A wonderful soundscape recorded in april in beautiful woods in southern illinois. You will hear a variety of birds, wrens, tufted titmice, a cerulean warbler and a louisiana waterthrush. Recorded with the zoom h4n recorder and my trusty rode nt-2 microphone.

A recording i made in may of 2013 as i was trying to get a good recording of the wonderful wood thrush recorded. You can still faintly hear the wood thrush in the background, but the nice surprise on this recording is the very clear, bubbling, trilling call of a proud little chipping sparrow. This recording was carefully made using my homemade parabolic reflector microphone. (*using my trusty rode ntg-2), and going into my handy zoom h4n recorder. I wanted to get as accurate a recording as possible so i bumped up the bit rate to 96 kpbs. I know it makes for a larger file, but i think it is worth it.

The pretty, soothing, trilling song of the pine warbler. These callings were recorded on sunday march 30th 2014 in a small pine grove, in the middle of a larger forest. On the day i recorded this, the weather was perfectly sunny, and mild -- temps about 60 degrees -- with very little wind. When i first heard this song, i was instantly reminded of a sewing machine. Enjoy. Recording made with my zoom h4-n field recorder, using a rode ntg-2 shotgun microphone placed on a tripod, about 3 feet above the forest floor. To make sure i got a decent level on this soft call, i did have to crank up the recording volume to about 85 on the scale of 100.

A recording i made literally on my front porch in january as a big mass of cold air was arriving with gusty winds. This wren was just chattering away. Made with zoom h4-n using its internal microphones, with the record volumeset on 80.

Recording of a small creek, water tumbling over a small limestone rock. I placed my zoom h4n recorder with built-in microphones so close that you will hear the ocassional "pop/puff" as a water drop actually hits the big foam wind-screen.

The beautiful, pleasant sound of the creek dropping over a small sandstone rock provides a nice background to the very "happy-to-be-here" louisiana waterthrush. As the earth continues to slowly tilt the northern hemisphere away from the warmth of the sun's rays, the pace of life in midwestern fields slows down. This recording was made at 3pm on wednesday october 5 2022 in a huge, 70-plus acre, abandoned farm field. A field bordered thousands of acres of state-owned forest. The soft peeps of the few remining birds, grubbing around for protein-packed insects is the soundtrack. At 5 minutes into this recording a delightful, friendly exchange between two birds as if they are saying "hey, let's help each other find food before this field is blanketed with snow at cold. ". At 7:05 in this recording a truck slowly drives by, softly crunching gravel and the driver slows down to witness this annual, melancholy autumnal change.
