A drowsy, warm lazy hot day in mid-summer in the forest of the midwestern usa. As is the case around mid-july, the birds are not singing as much. Perhaps they are just exhausted from raising a family and wilting from the heat. The insect chorus ebbs and flows, like the ocean waves creeping up on the beach, and retreating back. Except, unlike the ocean which never stops moving, the insects will eventually stop singing and hibernate for the winter. I have always loved the sound of propeller-driven planes and their slow, molasses-like sound. That sound has always induced a melancholy touch to the recordings. To me, this drowsing plane symbolizes change -- even though the birds and plants are still in full growth, the end is near. . . In about four more weeks schools will resume, the emphasis for many will turn inward. Leaving the woods to deal with the transition. The droning plane, like ocean waves, symbolize change. . . In several months there woods will be drastically changed. Recording made on july 18, 2022 using sound devices mixpre 6 and the sennheiser mkh 8020 omnidirectional microphone. A mid-summer recording of the shawnee national forest in illinois featuring the singing of two popular summer visitors: (1) indigo bunting and (2) white-eyed vireo. I really enjoy hearing these calls because, while beautiful in their own right, they also signify the soon-to-be summer coming to a close. Recording made on august 6, 2022 at about 2pm in a clearing surrounded byseveral dozen black walnut trees, and, beyond those, thick, midwestern, insect-laden summer woods. A semi-rare and priceless recording (at least to me) of a whippoorwill; a bird who, unfortunately, is declining in many areas of the country. This recording contains more hiss than many of my existing nature recordings, but i still want to post it so you can get sample of this wonderful signature sound of summer woods at dusk. Recording made in the shawnee national forest in late may of 2010 using my zoom h4n recorder. I used an audio technica at8035. I was trying out this microphone. This particular microphone does have a narrow acceptance angle, which is probably 1 reason for the hissiness. Still, go out in the summer woods around dusk sometime and maybe you will get lucky and hear this beautiful little bird whose distinctive calls have livened up the woods for generations of many youngsters – including me!.

This sound was recorded via the use of a behringer b2 microphone, fostex fr2 and a home made parabolic reflector made from a tv satellite dish. The source of the sound was between 100m-200m away from the microphone. This has been eq'ed with high-end shelving to reduce gain noise, low-end shelved up to 1khz (to reduce wind and background noise) and the overall gain has been increased. Do you sense the insects are more subdued than usual? as if they, too, are waiting for the cooler masses of early autumn?? the overall loudness of the birds is also down somewhat, maybe some of our neotropical migrants have already left. . . . Taking with them the wonderful midwest diet and warm memories of raising the next generations of their kind before the swamp turns gray, and cold and inhospitable for raising a family. . A recording in the midwestern forest made on sunday september 27th, 2015 around 3:00pm in early autumn. At this time of the year a lot of the summer neo-tropical migrant songbirds either have left for their winter home, or, are quieting down and preparing to leave. During this transition period in early fall the woods are not as loud as, say, three weeks ago. Even the insects seem subdued. At around 12 seconds into this recording you hear the squeaky call of a tree-frog. Recording made with marantz pmd661 and two sennheiser me-66 microphones mounted on a tripod about 4 feet above the ground.
