The sound of a cicada can be deafening, but it can also be the perfect buzz to drown out the negative thinking in your head. It's loud, overpowering and sharp, and it's really weird that it comes from an insect.

An aerosol can spraying several times, either a paint can or an insect repellent. (my apologies for the bird calls and wind in the background, field-recordings are difficult in a rural area. ).

A wonderful typical mid-summer soundscape of cicadas, and some katydids recorded on the edge of a small town in illinois. Towards the end of the recording you will hear a very cool doppler-effect as the truck passes from right to left. Recorded about 8:00 at night with my zoom h4-n recorder using it's internal microphones. I had the volume level set fairly high -- 80 -- so you will probably also hear the constant hum of the various central air conditioning units. .

What do you do if you enjoy recording the natural sounds of our planet and you can't sleep at 2:00 in the morning on a hot august evening?. You go out and record the insect chorus of course!. Recording made with the zoom h4n and the internal microphones. .

A small compilation of insects buzzing around.

I made this wonderful recording in july 2011 at about 9:00 at night on a hot, muggy july evening. This is the time of year when the insect chorus can get very, very loud. Pretty amazing volume for such small insects. The really loud ones seem to reside in the trees and not on the ground. Recorder used: zoom h4n recorder using its built-in stereo microphones.

A very typical sound-scape of an open field, bordered by the large shawnee national forest. A warm day in june, with a lot of birds, and, if you listen to the higher frequencies, in the background always there, are the ever-present insects. Recorded in june 2009 around 11:00 in the morning. Tempurature was about 78 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. This is also interesting in that it shows how, early in the summer, the bird vocalizations often are louder than the insects, but, as the summer goes on, this is reversed. . A summer morning field recording at newport lakes reserve, a former bluestone quarry and rubbish tip in the western melbourne suburb of newport. The area is now a vast suburban park with a native nursery and twin human-made lakes, popular with many species of birds and people. This recording was made using a sony pcm-m10 recorder's built-in omnidirectional stereo microphones. It was taken on january 15 2011 at 8. 30am, on unceded boon wurrung land, part of the eastern kulin nations. I acknowledge the sovereignty of the traditional owners and pay my respects to their elders and all first nations people.
