On november 8th 2019 the renowned steam engine the 'flying scotsman' ploughed its way through colwyn bay on its way from london to holyhead. . . This is the brief sound of it passing by. . . In my opinion, the welded rail tends to diminish the dramatic effect. . . In fact, i was surprised at how quiet the engine itself was. . .

I needed a background sound for a play i was involved in to suggest a busy train station in the 1930's. There are various steam sounds, door clucks, whistles and a lot of reverberation sound effect applied.

This stereo recording was made on november 23, 2014 in brady, washington. The clip contains a union pacific freight train rolling at moderate speed through a rail crossing. As the train passes a crossing bell can be heard abruptly shutting off. This original recording was made using a zoom h-6 handy recorder with zoom stereo xy microphone. This is a digitally synthesized version of the sound produced by current choppers on board the "jeumont element 041/042 train" used in the montreal metro. It is a five-note sequence of tones (90 hz, 120 hz, 180 hz, 240 hz, 360 hz) produced as the train accelerates out of the station. I could not make a recording of the actual jeumont train as the train was scrapped in 2018, which was before i even made my account!.

Steam train moves down the tracks, lots of steam sounds and puffing.

. . Inside an intercity express (ice) between stuttgart and mannheim, sitting in an almost empty (three passengers) second-class broad-spaced compartment at around 9 pm. After a shaky first minute an even part follows for around 90 seconds. Interrupted by some road holes the steady sound continues, now with the frequency of the engine sound rising until the beginning of the fourth minute. Here the "main part" begins, starting with several moments of acceleration, deceleracion and breaking. From minute 5:15 to 7:35 the train reaches it's peak velocity, with only few bumps. After a short deceleration the train inceases velocity again, reaching a second peak, this time noticeably bumpier. Once in a while you can hear some element of the fitments rattling nervously along the track, depending on the constitution of the railways and the overall situation. During the last two minutes the train keeps on decelerating slowly and continuously until the end. Recorded in stereo with a portable stereo recorder (zoom); enhanced in audacity using a parallel dynamic eq (tdr nova), a compressor (vos density mkiii) and a binaural spacializer (auburn panagement).

Field recording of elevated subway train in queens. The n and w trains take a sharp turn here, causing the wheels to squeal. Recorded using tascam dr-1 on 24-bit uncompressed setting. Used roll-off at 40 hz to save my speakers. I used a windscreen to cut down on wind noise which can otherwise be a problem on this recorder.
