One of my favorite summer and late-summer sounds. The night-hawk is the star of this recording. This recording was made around 9pm at night in mid-august and, even though i never could see this nighthawk, his calls pierced through the night-sky to let me know he was up there, somewhere, orbiting on the prowl for mosquitos and other insects. I have always loved this sound ever since i was a kid and going to sleep at night i felt comforted knowing that, like some circling fighter jet, the nighthawks would be on the job, plowing down the population of mosquitos, while i slept all night. Recording actually made in the parking lot of a major midwest university around 9pm at night on august 19th, 2014. Equipment: marantz pmd661 modified by oade brothers electronics, beyerdynamic me58 microphone. My record volume was 7.

A beautiful, simple and peaceful soundscape of a late summer day in illinois near an ancient swamp. This recording was made around 8 in the morning on a warm and slightly humid day in late september using the marantz pmd661 and a rode ntg2 shotgun microphone. Do you sense the insects are more subdued than usual? as if they, too, are waiting for the cooler masses of early autumn?? the overall loudness of the birds is also down somewhat, maybe some of our neotropical migrants have already left. . . . Taking with them the wonderful midwest diet and warm memories of raising the next generations of their kind before the swamp turns gray, and cold and inhospitable for raising a family. . A peaceful, drowsy-ish recording of a midwestern usa large field bordered by heavy forest. This was recorded in mid summer, on a very hot day. Temperature was 90 degrees, but, with 45% humidity it was manageable. The good thing about this recording is i was far enough away from humanity's engines to get no cars, no boats, no loud. . . . Anything. Well, except the insect chorus. This is the time of year in illinois that autumn is getting imperceptibly closer. The skies are clearer blue with less humidity. . . I used cubase and izotope denoise to remove noise artifacts, as well as a low-cut to remove unwanted low freqs. Recorded in mono but exported in stereo, so both the left and right audio channels are the same.

A classic deep woods, summer soundscate. The insects' droning seems to slow everything down as the high tempuratures bake the land. Every now and then you'll hear some bird calls in this recording. Towards the end, the insects temporarily stop and a goldfinch answers with his/her own call.

Sometimes you really need to get away to peace & quiet.
