This recording was made on a warm, clear day in early june right on the sandy bank of the mississippi river -- between illinois and missouri. You hear the low, strong surge of the diesel engines as a barge slowly passes through and, what i find most enjoyable, you hear the gentle lapping of the river as the waves reach the sandy shore. You also hear various birds, including the common red-winged blackbird. Even though this recording was made around 3pm in the afternoon, you also hear a low chorus of insects adding to the relaxing summer-like ambience. A very peaceful, yet strong soundscape of a majestic natural wonder that’s been here for millennia. Recording made with the zoom h4n, using the built-in internal mics.

Besides being an inspiration since man first explored her, the ancient mississippi river is also a highway for many coal-carrying barges. For this recording my zoom h4n was on the soft, powdery sandy bank about 60 feet from the river…you hear the gentle, but powerful thrumming of the giant diesel engines as a huge, 200 foot barge passes by. Some notable natural sounds are a very clear red-wing blackbird at 20 seconds in, and again at one mine in and again at one-minute 13 seconds into it. You hear a wonderful, clear splash at 27 seconds into as well. Recording made around 4pm on a warm -- 80 degrees -- june day. Close your eyes, dig into the powdery, soft sand of the mississippi river bank and float away on a warm summer day.

Recorded with a portable alesis digital recorder then widened and lightly manipulated in daw. This is actual foley of a stream recorded at close range. Public domain, do with as you please. If you use i'd love to see how you used it. Works great as a nice environmental sound for film work if laid softly in the background, if it's called for that is.

This clip was recorder 5 minutes out the little town of monterosso near a stream. You can hear clearly the sound of the water but you can hear also the nature all around: birds, insect, a rooster. This is the sound of a storm drain emptying into a gutter. My street floods in heavy rain, giving the storm drain a river-like sound. I placed my roland r-05 on the sidewalk just above the drain. It babbles and splashes like a river, but it is on a residential city street. I recorded it at 2am, so there are few vehicles in the recording though several faintly pass by in the background.
