The chimes of big ben first appeared on bbc radio at the very end of 1923 to announce the new year. In december 1948 this recording (catalogue number 825677) marked the 25th anniversary of big ben’s broadcasting career. Because the recording was made inside the tower there’s plenty of intriguing mechanical detail in addition to the tolling of the quarter bells and the 13-ton great bell. Big ben is the unofficial name for the great bell. Other london bell names include great paul and great tom in st pauls cathedral, and the inscribed names on the bells of st mary-le-bow in cheapside: katherine, fabian, christopher, margaret, mildred, faith, augustine, john, timothy, pancras, cuthbert and bow. Some bells - first played one by one, then some clusters (i think, if you are looking for the clusters, i have another soudn called more bells, and they are probably there). The bells were part of an art installation from yougoslavian artist stipo pranyko, who was having a retrospective at tea, in santa cruz de tenerife. This was recorded in the big halls of the museum, that's why there's so much reverb. Recorded with a zomm h4 n.

This is one of the original tubular bells used by mike oldfield, possibly for the 1999 tour. Note: this bell is only a dummy bell. It was stuffed with foam and fitted with a transducer to trigger a sample. I took the foam out and gave it a thwack! great fun but it sounds absolutely terrible in my opinion.
