Insects (i think mostly crickets) make this noise. It sounds so. . . Infernal!, or futuristic (electronic for sure). I recorded this (with my old zoom ii recorder) one summer night in tlacotlapan, at the southern mexican state of veracruz. All this happened for hours inside my hotel room. So you can imagine what kind of night i have. Wonderful memories.

This recording was made with a sound devices usbpre2 into a tascam dr-680 (spdif) and 2 microphones studio project c1 in ortf stereo pattern. It's in 24 bits 96khz , 40hz low cut.

Autumn is a time for slowing down and allowing yourself time for reflection and contemplation. The accomplishments and mistakes from the previous year. Especially if you make it a habit of getting out all year long and exploring nature, autumn can be a much-needed change in sensory soundscape. . . . After a busy spring listening to the many different warblers which come to visit and a busy summer immersed in the busy sounds of life----both human and natural----autumn's subtle, quiet muted soundscape can be almost like a re-birth for the ears and the soul. The insects, which had taken over center stage since august, are still singing---though now with a quieter volume and a more even sleep and though-inducing tempo. . . . . . . . Brisk winds from the north can be heard more clearly now----swishing, rustling the weedy, tan edges of fields. . . . . Hinting at the bite of much colder masses of canadian air waiting on deck for their turn in the months of november, december and january. . . I made this recording on the evening of october 4th 2014 at the edge of a field which was bordered by thick stands of oaks and pines of a major national forest. . . . . I couldn't help but pretend i was linus waiting in the pumpkin patch for the great pumpkin to arrive!. Recording made with my marantz pmd661 and a rode ntg-2 shotgun microphone on a tripod about 3 feet above the ground. My input volume was 6. I hope you enjoy this soundscape as much as i do.

Once july hits in the midwest and the temperature and humidity climbs, the insects take over the sound symphony. This mesmerizing sound was recorded on friday july 17th, 2015 at ferne clyffe state park in johnson county illinois. I recorded this using a marantz pmd661 and rode ntg-2 shotgun microphone. .

Recorded with an alesis palm track with the recorder placed directly in the tree, resting on a branch. Processed with soundbooth. Nothing added except gain.

This recording was made alongside a camera trap survey while at loagan bunut national park in sarawak, malaysia. It's a quite nice little bit that we didn't expect to ever find a use for, but came across this website and through i would share it. This is a cricket that was chirping outside of my apartment. There a few loud chirps at the beginning, followed by several softer chirps. I was able to get my recorder pretty close the cricket, so the sounds came out pretty good. I recorded this with a tascam dr-07 portable recorder.

This is a lone cricket recorded around 6pm in mid-november 2011 in my front yard using a rode ntg-2 mic mounted inside a parabolic reflector, recorded onto a zoom h4n.

A recording of a typical busy, yet peaceful later afternoon sound-scape of a small midwestern town at 5:30pm on a weekday. This was recorded on tuesday may 24th, 2016 using the marantz pmd661 and two sennheiser me66 microphones. . . True stereo recording. You will hear the delightful sound of neighborhood kids playing a friendly - or sometimes not so friendly - game of wiffleball which adds to the reflective nature of this recording. The trilling bird calling towards the end of the recording is the beautiful little, rusty-capped chipping sparrow. These chipping sparrows converge on the midwest around this time and their calls can be mistaken as an insect. Enjoy this summer 2016 recording and maybe it will trigger wonderful, innocent memories of your own childhood.

Close up recording of a bee on a flower, i had the mic input level turned up to max to see if it would pick anything up, i couldn't hear it at all, and it sounds pretty good! shame about those inconsiderate people in the background. "hey i'm trying to record a bee over here!" is not really something you can get away with saying to strangers.

This is a recording i made on sunday november 4th 2012 of the gentle, droning sounds of insects that were singing in a marshy area near the shore of a small lake. This is a very typical ambiance of autumn in the southern portion of illinois. If you listen carefully, you'll hear another very typical fall sound, the cry of blue jays in the heavy woods which surround this lake. One of my favorite sound-scapes. I made this with my rugged and dependable handy zoom h4n recorder, using its built-in microphones. I literaly had it sitting on a small log only about 15 feet from the water's edge. Because the insects were not very loud, i did have to crank up my record volume to 86 on the scale of 100; this means you will hear a little bit of slight wind rumble, but all-in-all i think the recording paints a good picture of the early autumn landscape and everything slows down and winds down for the bitter winter ahead.
