I stood on the platform at the montrose l station with a sony minidisc and recorded the entire process of a nyc subway train coming and going. This long recording was taken aboard the odoriko super view train from ito city bound for atami. You can hear the conductor's announcements, station arrivals and departures, passenger conversations (in japanese) and, of course, the train itself. The recording is unprocessed and made with a stereo mic pair at a 90 degree incidental angle.

A long recording on board the "green car" of the jr tokkaido line from atami to shinagawa. A "green car" refers to the first class cars on some long distance local trains. The ride is smoother and the cars are generally much quieter. The cars are generally empty but, this was at the end of a 3 day weekend, so the car was actually quite active (i'll try to get a quiet one soon). You can hear the ticket attendant, the conductor's announcements, station arrivals and departures, passengers getting on and off the train and settling in and having conversations. At some point you can hear the guy behind me eating senbei (a crunchy japanese rice cracker) - that's a little annoying, but there might be some usable bits in there if you're good at editing backgrounds. But like i said, i'll try to get a less busy train next time. Recorded with 2 stereo mic pairs and unedited.

This file was recorded on november 19 2013 at london's euston railway station quite close to the arrivals board. It was achieved using an olympus ls-100 digital recorder with cad m179 microphones attached to a jecklin disk (see wikipedia) to obtain the best sound possible. As opposed to quasi-binaural recordings where the user attaches small diaphragm microphones to his/her shirt collar (my usual recording method), the jecklin disk can be mounted on a semi-fixed object such as a floor-standing microphone stand which it was in this case, and left for a few moments for the best possible outcome. Using a jecklin disk means that there are no minute movements from a person trying to stand as still as possible, and for some unknown reason, this setup is able to differentiate in front and behind sound image although i personally do not know why this is the case.
