Midwestern forests can be quite noisy during the early spring when the various neo-tropical migrants invade the woods to get fat of insects and to raise a family. In this recording, made on the bank of a small creek situated in a ravine, you will hear various birds including, northern parula, louisiana waterthrush, an eastern phoebe, a carolina wren and an american robin. Recording made with my handy zoom h4n recorder propped up about 3 feet from the forest floor on a tripod and using the unit's internal, stereo microphones. Enjoy.

The sound of southampton water at around 5am on a bank holiday monday (national holiday). The microphone was placed right at the shoreline where the water meets the land. There are distant boats/ships, the oil refinery and a few sea birds. The wind was about 2 to 4 mph and that created some very small waves that can be heard lapping against the shore. You can hear a small amount of children in the background and one child suddenly shouting "happy new year" and scaring the bejesus out of me at about 3 minutes. I change position at 1 minute 30 (pretty much climbing entirely out of the window) and you get a much more impressive surround sound feel after that. This recording was made on a warm, clear day in early june right on the sandy bank of the mississippi river -- between illinois and missouri. You hear the low, strong surge of the diesel engines as a barge slowly passes through and, what i find most enjoyable, you hear the gentle lapping of the river as the waves reach the sandy shore. You also hear various birds, including the common red-winged blackbird. Even though this recording was made around 3pm in the afternoon, you also hear a low chorus of insects adding to the relaxing summer-like ambience. A very peaceful, yet strong soundscape of a majestic natural wonder that’s been here for millennia. Recording made with the zoom h4n, using the built-in internal mics.

This is a simple recording of the passing crowd in the heart of the latin quarter of paris, france, on a wednesday evening between christmas and new year's eve. The recording was made at the corner of the pedestrian xavier privas and huchette streets, with the mics aimed diagonally across the street, about 4. 5 feet above ground. By a happy coincidence (i'd like to say that i engineered it, but i didn't), this sound file loops seamlessly. The clip includes the sounds of many people passing by (the area was very crowded), and some snippets of conversation, mostly in french, with a few other languages thrown in. Some faint traffic noise can be heard on the left, from the busy quai saint michel street along the south bank of the seine river, at the north end of the xavier privas street (left of the mics in this recording). One of my favorite sounds of spring and summer is the beautiful night-hawk. Around dusk they patrol the skies over generally open areas searching for insects. They actually seem to prefer areas where there are man-made structures; that's why you will hear them often in town, especially near baseball/softball fields where the big banks of lights attract their food source. They really do seem fond of and are quite common around towns and cities. Plus, another amazing fact that i read on the cornell ornithology website is that these birds do not build a nest, rather the female simply lays her eggs directly on the ground, and lets camouflage do the rest!.
