These recordings were made during a location-scouting trip i took some time ago to southern germany, where we had a look at some cathedrals to shoot a documentary. I took the time to record a few atmos with my handy h2. . . This is a very touristy sort of restaurant in the center of the historical town of speyer, featuring people talking in various languages, restaurant noises and, last but not least, no background music!.

Main street in tourist costal city of dziwnówek in west poland. It's typical for cities like that: full of cheesy market stands. The game of coin-football, which you can hear ringing constantly in the background is also characteristic for polish coastal tourist areas. Many people (talking mostly polish language), and several cars are passing by. I am standing on pavement, and have thestreet in front of me and backside of supermarket behind me. The sound was recorded with zoom h3vr (ambix format).

This is a simple recording of the passing crowd in the heart of the latin quarter of paris, france, on a wednesday evening between christmas and new year's eve. The recording was made at the corner of the pedestrian xavier privas and huchette streets, with the mics aimed diagonally across the street, about 4. 5 feet above ground. By a happy coincidence (i'd like to say that i engineered it, but i didn't), this sound file loops seamlessly. The clip includes the sounds of many people passing by (the area was very crowded), and some snippets of conversation, mostly in french, with a few other languages thrown in. Some faint traffic noise can be heard on the left, from the busy quai saint michel street along the south bank of the seine river, at the north end of the xavier privas street (left of the mics in this recording). Recorded with a hand-held zoom h4n, stereo, 96 khz / 24 bits, built-in mics.

The recorder is located at a busy intersection with lots of pedestrian and motor traffic. Around 2 mins into the recording, a motor scooter noisily passes by the recorder. Street noises recorded while walking through the most touristy area of montmartre, in paris, france. Streets visited include rue des saules, rue norvins, rue du mont cenis, rue du chevalier de la barre, rue du cardinal guibert, rue azais, rue saint eleuthere, in that order. He had a powerful but distorted amplifier--the bad sound quality was like that in real life. I turned around in front of the basilica on this dead-end street and that's why the music switches sides. 08:23-08:40-> yes, that's a chainsaw. The city was trimming some large trees. 09:33-09:47-> more chainsaw noise as i walked past the workers on azais street. 10:00-11:00-> increasing crowd noise as i walk back north to the busiest part of montmartre along saint eleuthere street. Recorded with a hand-held h4n at 96 khz / 24-bits, stereo, compressed into 160 kbps / 44. 1 khz / 16 bits mp3. Recording date march 16, 2012, in the early afternoon.

Surround recording of the main square in diocletian's palace in the old center of split in croatia. It is a summer afternoon, flying swallows can be heard and the place is teeming with tourists from all nations sitting and drinking coffee or listening to a group of folk singers which can be heard in the distant background. Part of the square is covered with a large wooden porch, making quite a clatter as the tourists walk over it. Recorded with a zoom h2. Field recordings extracted from videos i took while travelling on a vaporetto (small public transport canal boat) along the grand canal. You can hear the water, the engine revving as the boat criss-crosses the canal from one stop to the next and the(mostly english)chatter of other passengers on the boat. On "venice2" horns are blown by other vessels and someone says at the end "i'm getting off the boat". I have joined 2 tracks on this one and there is a small gap, but with the right equipment that can be edited out. All in all very evocative of the busy atmosphere in venice, even in march (2012).

Stereo ambience of people passing by at the kulturforum in berlin. This is a large open concrete space next to the berlin philharmonic hall. It's a warm summer evening and the berlin philharmonics have just finished an open air concert. The recording starts about 15 minutes after the end of the concert while everyone is leaving the place, maybe about 1000-1500 people. The crowd is generally in a happy and talkative mood. There are lots of international folks and tourists, so you'll not only hear german, but also english and lots of other languages. After six minutes or so there is also a police siren in the background. Recorded with a zoom h6 (xy mics). A high-quality recording of a quiet day on the steps in front of the st. Ursen cathedral in solothurn, switzerland. You can hear the two fountains which build the background sound. Also, there are tourists and swiss people walking nearby and talking. The sound was recorded in 24bit on a professional zoom recorder with the xyh-5 stereo microphone. For postprocessing, only unwanted noises were cut from the recording and the overall sound level was raised.

The sales crew are a merry lot, bantering loudly with the tourists of different nations that are absolutely cramming the place. Lots of multinational voices can be heard, men, women and children talking loudly and all at once. Rear channels of a 4ch-surround recording of the interior atmo of a small airbus passenger airliner (a lufthansa flight from london heathrow to berlin tegel). In the onset, you hear the steady drone of the jets, people talking, coughing, sneezing, newspapers rustling and notebook computers being typed on. Now and then, passengers and stewardesses pass by the aisle. Near the end, a signal bell sounds, and the drone of the jets takes on a perceivably higher tone, shortly after which the landing in berlin is announced, first in german, then in english.
