The crowd hasn't arrived, so the night clubs are very audible, lots of bass beats pounding. It's a summer night in the san diego gaslamp district. Recorded in stereo from high up in a hotel window. Some street sounds waft up as well. The other two in this series are different. Both have thick crowd noise. The no. 2 track has an angry crown cordoned off by the police.

Wild parrots started flying in and landing on the trees along mission bay in san diego on a cool, cloudy day. I walk around and catch some individuals and groups. Sometimes they fly overhead. I did my best to minimize footstep sounds and wind noise. Mostly, i did a good job of that. No. 2 at about 2:35 there's a nice group after a long silence, so don't quit beforehand. The stereo mics add to the liveliness of the sounds.

Recorded in a small park in san diego, ca close to the shore. You'll mostly hear construction workers and an airplane flying overhead. Recorded outside with a zoom h5 using the stereo microphones that come with it. There is a bit of noise in this one.

Roller coaster- nothing really noteworthy about this recording. It’s just a nice wide stereo capture of an old style wood-frame roller coaster. I think there were only 2 or 3 people riding it as i did this recording, as it was a not-at-all busy weekday afternoon in the off season. We get a passing motorcycle at the very beginning, and then a distant plane just prior to the roller coaster. I went out to the lake to record some ducks. This day they weren’t squawking as much as i’d hoped, but the wind was calmer than it normally is, and the wind really is your biggest enemy when making outdoor recordings like these. But overall, the recording isn’t bad. The ducks are smallish black ones with white beaks called the american coot. Lots of tweeting birds in there too, especially the first half, and i think those are just the normal small sparrows that you see everywhere. Couple people chatting, but they’re way in the distance. A little bit of a plane or two overhead, but i think i edited most of that out. Nady stereo condenser microphonefocusrite saffire pro24 interfacelogic 8 on a macbook prolake murray in san diego.

Plane- it’s difficult to get good recordings of planes taking off these days. There’s always major streets or highways close by which results in a bunch of unwanted traffic noise. It’s difficult to find a good vantage point to set up because there’s hardly any public parking with unobstructed sight lines (or in my case hearing lines) to the planes. Plus, with all the extra security measures in place these days, how suspicious would i look setting up a laptop andsome cables and some other electronic equipment in the general area of the runway?but i managed to get this recording. It’s not spectacular, but it’s ok. There’s some worker truck at the end of it which gets in the way, but doesn’t ruin it. Bowling alley- the thing with recording a bowling alley is that the pins are so far away. When you’re the one bowling, you’re not really listening to all the chatter around you; in fact your brain does its best to cancel it out (it’s called selective listening, google it), and so you really hear the clamoring of the pins as they crash and fall. Microphones don’t have any such ability; they just take in whatever sound waves reach them, and they don’t care either way about the relative loudness of those sound waves. So what happens in a recording like this is that even though it sounds like any ordinary (busy) bowling alley, the pins sound really far away in relation to the human chatter.
