A stereo recording of a weekday afternoon at melbourne general cemetery (victoria, australia), in the suburb of carlton north or princes hill. There are some birds, a plane flying overhead. On many days i take a two mile walk from my house to my job. One gorgeous day i took my zoom h1 and sampled audio at various points during this walk. To avoid footsteps, i recorded each location standing still. In this file i gradually crossfade between the different locations. The walk begins on a suburban street, goes past a park where children are playing baseball, then a busy intersection, then a factory with open windows. A couple planes can be heard overhead. I went out to the lake to record some ducks. This day they weren’t squawking as much as i’d hoped, but the wind was calmer than it normally is, and the wind really is your biggest enemy when making outdoor recordings like these. But overall, the recording isn’t bad. The ducks are smallish black ones with white beaks called the american coot. Lots of tweeting birds in there too, especially the first half, and i think those are just the normal small sparrows that you see everywhere. Couple people chatting, but they’re way in the distance. If you stand just underneath a commercial airplane as it's coming in to land (as was the case here at dfw airport) and so long as there's not a lot of noise around you (like loud traffic, etc. ) then when the jet passes overhead, what you can't see is that at the tips of the wings are rapidly spinning vortices of air that coil off the wingtips as the plane passes through air. These long, coiling spirals of air will eventually "close" and as that happens, it creates a momentary but bizarre, surreal sound that you really need to hear for yourself in person to get the full effect. Three quick samples of the gear one mk1000 on kick (+ a single audio technica at2020 overhead on the rest of the kit). Recorded straight into a tascam us-1800 in a lousy room with a less-than-optimal 22" mapex kick drum. Each quick loop / snippet is 1) presented in mono / processed with compression and some eq (mostly a 6dbish scoop at around 300hz on the mk1000 and 80hz rolloff on the 2020 with about 5db less on the mk1000 than the 2020), then 2) presented exactly as recorded / no processing at all save normalization, mk1000 panned hard left channel, at2020 panned hard right. The first two samples are the mk1000 in the resonant head cutout, the third is the mk1000 positioned about 4" from the head and just about 2" from dead center of the drum.
