Sitting in a small cabin in the woods of north carolina, the sound of ice particles (sleet) hitting a stove-pipe can be heard. It's cold. It's bleak. The power has just cut off. A pistol being dry fired once. I created this sound back in 2019 using multiple recordings of an airsoft browning hi-power replica that i mixed together until it turned into this early 00s video game-y type clicky dry fire sound. This is a sound of mine that i made, it's a washing machine on a fast spin, it sounds rather like an old british style diesel train at speed. I used my canon power shot a460 camera video to film the washing machine in action and simply took the sound from the video. This was an attempt at the ice speed record by a rocket powered snow machine called the arctic arrow. The old record was 247 mph. On this run he goes 241mph but at the finish line he loses control and crashes quite dramatically! the driver, kurt anderson walked away. I have photos of the crash as well if interested. A test recording of a top-loading washing machine accelerating to 1000rpm on its final spin cycle. Note that it's not as high-quality as i would've liked, but i'll try again soon. The machine in question is a fisher & paykel quicksmart 5. 5kg (mw513) running on 240v 50hz power. This machine utilises a "direct drive" bldc motor instead of the traditional induction motor and pulley.

A slinky spring toy stretched out and plucked once from the end, recorded with a zeppelin design labs cortado impedance-matched piezo contact microphone. The resulting recording is a classic spring-based sci-fi "laser sound" with a massive, lengthy, rumbling decay tail. This was recorded at 24 bit 96 khz. In addition to its use as a sound effect, this waveform works well inside a convolution reverb as an offbeat spring reverb impulse response, provided one has the processor power and ram to support a 2 minute 13 second convolution. The cortado's bass response is exceptionally large for a contact mic, so high pass filtering may be desired if used as an impulse response.

Fireworks- recording fireworks is really strange. There are two distinct things going on with fireworks- the sound of the explosion, and the powerful physical impact our bodies feel when all that sound energy reaches us. Thing is, the mics don’t have any way of capturing that physical impact; they can only record the pop sound of the initial explosion. So what ends up on tape? honestly, it doesn’t sound much different than popping popcorn in your kitchen. Even with my good mics, i think i had to boost the low end a little bit in this recording to make it actually sound more like fireworks than popcorn. But judge for yourself. After searching the vastness of the interweb for some 6 inch zilbel samples with no luck, i finally decided to record my own bell. Theres 3 versions of 4 single samples each, 4 chokes, 4 medium and 4 hard hits. I know a lot of you out there have been searching for some samples of one of these bells for a long time so here ya go guys, totally free, full to use for whatever you want, no credit needed to be given to me. These sound amazing in a mix and really add a lot of life to your drum tracks, they dont sound over compressed (theyre dry recordings) and they dont over power everything else, nice crisp and clear.
