Mosquito.

This is a version of the sound that (if you're over 25) you can hear. It's called mosquito. They've been using it as a silent deterrent in the uk to clear streets of teenagers. . . Hmmmm. Makes you wonder. Not a great sound sample, but horrible to listen to and a reminder to us all of the power of sound. And the invisibility of it. Kj.

Here's the original version of the mosquito device that's designed to repel teenagers from shops and streets. If you're over 25 you won;t hear anything but the street sounds and a girl laughing. If you're under 25 then you might hear a rather nasty high pitched siren sound. . . Terrible quality (mp3) recording but interesting to know just how much sound isn't heard. Just because you can't hear it doesn't mean it isn't there.

When you eliminate a mosquito.

A singular comedic mosquito buzz. Created in audacity by:1. Generating a sawtooth wave2. Equalizing the tone slightly (a bit less high end)3. Applying the vibrato-phase. Ny plugin in pairs like: 5. 1, 5. 2, 8. 1, 8. 2, 0. 5, 0. 51 hz5. Applying a ring modulation plugin in a similar way. If you want something more retro, equalize down the higher frequencies.

This kind of wasp is building individual nests made out of mud. Then they lay an egg inside of each one and brings a reserve of food in it for the future larvae. This is the sound of the female wasp working on its mud coccoon. Recorded on a tascam dr-40 with a rode ntg-1.

This sound field recording was made back in 2000 on a very late/early morning. I placed the sony microphone ontop of the car outside to record the crickets and cicadas. There were a lot of mosquitos out that hot night. One of them landed on the mic and actually bit the microphone. You have to listen close but the bug bites at about 14:28 and removes the mosquito blood sucker at about 34:28. This is not the actual sound of a bug being killed. That is a much shorter sound. This is the sound that comes when the bug zapper is first plugged in. It's the startup sound. I use it for my text notification. My wife says that it sounds like a fart.
