A recording of the peaceful mid-autumn woods here in the midwest usa. I recorded this on november 15 2022 using a sony pcm d-100. In the northern hemisphere now, days now are much shorter, and much colder. Which means all of our energetic summer warblers and other migrants have long gone south, and are no doubt lounging around in a palm tree or something just gorging on insects. Here is the midwest woods? sure the summer birds are gone, but, the beauty of this season is that now you can hear the birds that never leave us. No matter how brutal the winter is, the blue jays, the black-capped chickadees, the many species of woodpeckers and the belted kingfishers never leave. This creates a different, but beautiful soundscape in the woods. For this particular recording, since i've found through years of roaming the woods, birds have a tendancy to be near water, i placed the recorder on a creekbank about 15 feet from a shallow creek. Now of course i could have gotten closer to the creek but by now the entire woods is a carpet of leaves -- this very slow-moving creek included. Which means the leaves had accumulated on thevery still creek water itself and i was concerned if i stepped on the leaves--thinking it was solid ground underneath, i would instead be "treated" to an ice cold pair of shoes and socks!. I've been meaning to try and capture that magical, melancholy feeling of the late summer and early fall of the midwest woods. This was recorded in the shawnee forest in southern illinois on saturday september 28th, 2019. Equipment used: zoom f4microphones: lom usi pro omnissennheiser mkh 416sennheiser me66. Enjoy the soundscape filled with plenty of birds---but, birds that stay here during the winter.

A recording of dry leaves skittering across an asphalt parking lot around 2:00pm on a friday afternoon. I feel this recording captures the serene, but sad, sound of dry leaves in the fall being scattered about by a strong north wind. Recording made with the marantz pmd661-oade, and the incredible beyerdynamic me58 microphone. Since this particular microphone is a dynamic microphone, i had to crank my record gain up to 7. I was really happily surprised that the sometimes un-listenable wind-roar and wind rumble is barely noticeable on this recording. . . . . . Emjoy this autumn soundscape.

Here is a recording taken from a boardwalk running through a swamp in jackson county illinois. Recorded on friday september 23 2022 as the season of autumn begins to stir. By now the neo-tropical warblers and other migrants are gone. Leaving the woodpeckers and blue jays and crows. A reflective ambiance of a now dry swamp, slowing down awaiting the arrival of full-on autumn, then winter. You hear the wind sifting through the branches of the oaks, and hickories and maples, the chattering of woodpeckers, and, since this is the time of year of the harvest, you hear the often dropping of acorns, and hickory nuts, and pieces of hickory nuts and acorns, as the squirrels 30 feet above the swamp get sloppy with their lunch. I was lucky to be able to capture this beautiful, sentimental sound of the wind through clattering leaves, without the accompanying wind roar.

Recording during a strong autumn storm, with heavy rain, in a large garden, surrounded by big pine trees. The wind was so strong, that i had a fear that one of the branches of the pines could snap and fall on me. The recording is a 32bit float, 48khz ms-stereo one, made with a sennheiser mkh 416, and ambient ate 308 emesser figure of eight, in a røde blimp with fur cover. I was amazed that the blimp did its job this good in this strong wind.

A beautiful, ancient sound of a small creek flowing in a heavy midwestern forestafter a late autumn day of rain. (recorded on sunday november 30th, 2019)this particular " scene " is the result of a 2 inch deep flow of water suddenly dropping over several medium-sized old rocks. In a few days, this flow will cease and the creek-bed will revert back to its typical, meandering , dry rocky path through the woods. Enjoy. One of autumn's most signature sounds is that of dry leaves skittering and tumbling as they ride along on a hard surface. In this case, the hard surface is asphalt. Hardly any other sound, just the strong autumn wind, and bunches of dried out sweet gum, maple and oak leaves racing across an asphalt parking lot. Think of it, also, as the sound from our youth, our careful youth when everything was achievable. At least for me, this brings me back to my happy place. Recorded on saturday october 17 2020 in an asphalt parking lot buffeted by gusts between 20 and 30 mph. Sound devices 702. Sennheiser mkh416 left channel, beyerdynamic m58 right channel.

The tv weather guy said watch out, saturday october 17 2020 is going to be very breezy, with sustained winds out of the southwest at 20 mph, with many gusts at 30mph. A perfect day in a midwest small-town neighborhood for painting a picture of peace, and thoughtful reminiscing in mid october. From time to time you will hear the distant sound of creaking swings and laughter from a kids playground.
