One of my favorite summer and late-summer sounds. The night-hawk is the star of this recording. This recording was made around 9pm at night in mid-august and, even though i never could see this nighthawk, his calls pierced through the night-sky to let me know he was up there, somewhere, orbiting on the prowl for mosquitos and other insects. I have always loved this sound ever since i was a kid and going to sleep at night i felt comforted knowing that, like some circling fighter jet, the nighthawks would be on the job, plowing down the population of mosquitos, while i slept all night. Recording actually made in the parking lot of a major midwest university around 9pm at night on august 19th, 2014. Equipment: marantz pmd661 modified by oade brothers electronics, beyerdynamic me58 microphone. My record volume was 7.

I found this wonderful 4 foot high waterfall in a small canyon in the shawnee national forest in southern illinois. The cool splashing of the rivulet as it spilled out onto a catch-pool was enhanced by the echo as the sound bounced off the 3-sided grotto. Recorded on one of the hottest days of august 2011 using my rode ntg-2 shotgun mic into zoom h4n recorder.

Another recording of one of my favorite fall soundscapes featuring cottonwood leaves "shimmering", the lonely call of a blue jay and the soft sound of insects singing a little more quiet than they do in the warmer temps of summer. Recorded using my zoom h4-n recorder, and the famous sm57 microphone.

A recording done in late october of several years ago featuring the crisp sound of the leaves of a giant cottonwood tree being brushed by fall breezes. The sound of a lonely blue-jay really adds to this soundscape. Recorder used: handy zoom h4-n with internal microphones.

However, here is a recording that i made this past friday october 19th, 2012 in a small town in southern illinois. It's not perfect, but i'm happy with it. A peaceful medium-sized creek in the midwest. At 41 seconds into the recording, in the left channel you will faintly hear some walkers casually strolling by on this brisk 35 degree day. Then, at 1:45 into the recording, some light bird callsadd to this peaceful recording. Recording made in the shawnee national forest in southern illinois in late december of 2018. A recording made in the shawnee national forest in illinois on the very first day of october, 2022. This recording was made at mid-afternoon and features the peaceful, pleasant wind through the deciduous trees. From time to time though, the soft call of a nuthatch or a chickadee reminds us there is still bird life in the early autumn woods. Birds getting ready, getting stocked up for the upcoming northern assaults of cold air this winter. Some crows really start to put on a show towards the end of this stereo recording. Recorded in stereo using a zoom f4 recorder. Microphones:left channel- neumann km184right channel - audio technica bp4025.

A peaceful, drowsy-ish recording of a midwestern usa large field bordered by heavy forest. This was recorded in mid summer, on a very hot day. Temperature was 90 degrees, but, with 45% humidity it was manageable. The good thing about this recording is i was far enough away from humanity's engines to get no cars, no boats, no loud. . . . Anything. Well, except the insect chorus. This is the time of year in illinois that autumn is getting imperceptibly closer. The skies are clearer blue with less humidity. . . A few trees had red leaves. Nature taking a breather. Recorded at 2:30pm on thursday august 26, 2022 using a mixpre 6 recorder. Left channel: rode nt5 cardioid microphone. Right channel: sennheiser mkh 416 microphone.
