A raven flying by overhead in a forest on gabriola island off the coast of bc. Some droney ambiance from steel mill across the water in nanaimo. As the raven flies overhead, it is remarkable how well the mic picked up the flapping of its wings. Recorded with a zoom h2.

I fluttered a plastic spatula in front of my tlm-103 in the studio. It's recorded at 96k, 32 bits, so you can stretch it or pitch it any way you want. If you want it to sound small you'll want to filter off the low end. On the other hand, you can probably get some fun gigantic effects by using just the bass, or even pitching it down. An odd sound: i set pocket recorder out hoping to capture some birdsong; a raven swooped down and made a couple of passes above it. Perhaps he was attracted by the colorful fuzzy windscreen? at any rate: recorded on an olympus ls-14, some wind in the trees in the background.

Some recordings meant to work as the flapping of bat wings. To record this, i just used a plant with slightly leathery/plastic-sounding leaves and shook it a few times in front of a mic. Simple but effective!.
