Първата регистрирана употреба на руското зелено като наименование на цвят на английски език е през 30-те години на XIX век (точната година не е сигурна). Изглежда, че терминът се отнася за средния нюанс на зеленото, носен от повечето полкове на руската императорска армия от 1700 до 1914 г.

„Тирийски лилав“ е съвременното английско наименование на цвят, който на латински се обозначава с „purpura“. Други съвременни английски наименования на пурпура са „имперско лилаво“ и „кралско лилаво“. Самото английско наименование „purple“ първоначално е обозначавало специфичния цвят purpura.
