Názvy barev

První zaznamenané použití ruské zelené jako názvu barvy v angličtině pochází z 30. let 19. století (přesný rok není jistý). Zdá se, že tento termín označuje střední odstín zelené, který nosila většina pluků ruské císařské armády v letech 1700 až 1914.

„Tyrský purpur“ je současný anglický název barvy, která se v latině označuje jako ‚purpura‘. Další současné anglické názvy pro purpuru jsou „imperial purple“ a „royal purple“. Samotný anglický název „purple“ původně označoval specifickou barvu purpura. Purpura je barva barviva získávaného z měkkýše nalezeného na pobřeží města Tyru ve starověké Fénicii (současný Libanon), jehož barva byla v klasickém starověku symbolem královské a politické moci, protože si ji mohli dovolit jen velmi bohatí lidé, včetně římských císařů. Proto se tyrský purpur označoval také jako „císařský purpur“.

Šedozelená (známá také jako šedozelená, zelenošedá, smaragdově šedá nebo zelenošedá) je zelenošedá barva.
