My great-uncle and great-aunt have an old grandfather clock. It doesn't quite work right and only chimes 7 times at 12 o'clock, so i had to record it at 11 and add another chime. Nonetheless, it makes for a great ambient sound, especially in a horror setting. I recorded it with my tablet (samsung galaxy tab a) and edited it with audacity (added in an extra chime, converted it to stereo, etc. ).

You can hear people in the park next to york minster chatting, walking, laughing and there's distant city noises. Then, around halfway through the recording the bells start to ring out for midday. This is the sound that welcomes me any time i go into the kitchen: it is produced by an old "made in italy" clock called veglia (like the one in this picture: http://i63. Tinypic. Com/2lb13io. Jpg) that is functioning since my grandfather bought it, many years ago.
