On many days i take a two mile walk from my house to my job. One gorgeous day i took my zoom h1 and sampled audio at various points during this walk. To avoid footsteps, i recorded each location standing still. In this file i gradually crossfade between the different locations. The walk begins on a suburban street, goes past a park where children are playing baseball, then a busy intersection, then a factory with open windows. A couple planes can be heard overhead. The last thing in the recording is the door of my job opening. ----recorded with internal microphones of a zoom h1.

A field recording i made. This recording was made at a canal when it was reasonably dry. The canal has a road running parallel to it and above it. The side of that road has a largish (30cm?) pipe that drains water into the canal. I made this recording by holding my zoom h5 portable recorder in this pipe, and recording with the inbuilt stereo pair of microphones. You can hear the traffic passing above with the zoom of the occasional fast truck, but it's muted and it's echoing around the pipe. There's a hollow rumble running through the whole track. A summer morning field recording at newport lakes reserve, a former bluestone quarry and rubbish tip in the western melbourne suburb of newport. The area is now a vast suburban park with a native nursery and twin human-made lakes, popular with many species of birds and people. A mid-summer recording of the shawnee national forest in illinois featuring the singing of two popular summer visitors: (1) indigo bunting and (2) white-eyed vireo. I really enjoy hearing these calls because, while beautiful in their own right, they also signify the soon-to-be summer coming to a close. Recording made on august 6, 2022 at about 2pm in a clearing surrounded byseveral dozen black walnut trees, and, beyond those, thick, midwestern, insect-laden summer woods. A beautiful call of the eastern phoebe. . . This call is also a very unique call in the bird-world. In the eastern and midwestern united states, these are usually the first to arrive in the spring. I have seen these many times as i hike in the deep woods, but this was a nice surprise for me to hear one, literally, in my backyard about 7 o:clock in the morning. I recorded this one in my backyard -- i live in a small town in a rural area. I caught this on my handy zoom h4n recorder, using its internal, built-in stereo microphones set on a record volume about 70. Enjoy. .

These beautiful birds stay here in southern illinois all year long, and are a welcome flash of color and blue crest once autumn begins arriving. Now, i have always thought this call of the blue jay is not the prettiest or melodic at all; in fact, hearing the call of a blue jay can be a bit unnerving. . . But, to me, it is symbolic of the " wild " ness of nature. . . One of my most melancholy nature sound. . . A very typical sound-scape of an open field, bordered by the large shawnee national forest. A warm day in june, with a lot of birds, and, if you listen to the higher frequencies, in the background always there, are the ever-present insects. Recorded in june 2009 around 11:00 in the morning. Tempurature was about 78 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. This is also interesting in that it shows how, early in the summer, the bird vocalizations often are louder than the insects, but, as the summer goes on, this is reversed. . This recording was taken from the balcony of an apartment in johor bahru malaysia on september 30th 2022 at about 1:30pm. It was monsoon season but not raining and the weather was hazy and muggy. The recording features the drone of a busy city punctuated by a whippersnipper, a building site, birds, a light aeroplane and car horns. At around the 4:30 mark there's two loud motorcycles that race each other and echo around the city in a most glorious way. The recording was made with the inbuilt stereo microphones of a zoom h5 portable recorder.

A stereo recording made at 4:50pm on saturday september 12th 2015 of the ambience of a small town near a playground. Up until this day, the weather here in the midwest had been your typical high-heat high-humidity. But, the day before this field-recording was made the wonderful jet-stream had dropped down on us, a cool, mass of less-humid canadian air, making the leaves sing through the trees with the lifting of the northwest breezes. A gentle tinkling wind-chime can be heard from 1:05 to 1:20. Recording made in stereo with marantz pmd661 and two sennheiser me66 microphones mounted on tripods about 4 feet off the ground.

This was recorded in the centre of oxford, near the junction between broad street and turl street, on 23rd february 2013. I was facing west along broad street with turl street, and the pavement, to my left. There are many different sounds on this recording including bikes being parked (i was standing near a bike rack) and ridden, cars lurking for a parking space, dropping people off and turning round (broad street has a car park in the middle of it), plenty of different people walking past and talking, and a big issue seller. I recording made near some woods of the wind ebbing and flowing on an unusually mild day in late november of 2013. What i find unique about this recording is a lone cricket calling out at various times of this recording. . . Makes for a nice, almost melancholy feeling. It is almost like the cricket is not quite ready to hide away for the winter and is taking advantage of a rare 70-degree november day to call out as if to say "hey, i'm still here, waiting. . . In the grass. ". With headphones on, works wonders in clearing your head. . . You will hear the delightful sound of neighborhood kids playing a friendly - or sometimes not so friendly - game of wiffleball which adds to the reflective nature of this recording. The trilling bird calling towards the end of the recording is the beautiful little, rusty-capped chipping sparrow. These chipping sparrows converge on the midwest around this time and their calls can be mistaken as an insect. Boomerang is a steel shuttle roller coaster located at bellewaerde in ypres, west flanders, flemish region, belgium. Although it wasn't the first vekoma boomerang to be built, it was the first to be opened due to technical issues with the other roller coaster. This spectacular roller coaster takes you to a height of 32 m, before launching you forward and backward, like a boomerang, at over 80 km/h. There is a lot of nonsense in this file. Some belgian teenagers are talking about their families, their teachers, to fall out of the coaster, banana, carrot. . . You can even hear some flemish words. Bowling alley- the thing with recording a bowling alley is that the pins are so far away. When you’re the one bowling, you’re not really listening to all the chatter around you; in fact your brain does its best to cancel it out (it’s called selective listening, google it), and so you really hear the clamoring of the pins as they crash and fall. Microphones don’t have any such ability; they just take in whatever sound waves reach them, and they don’t care either way about the relative loudness of those sound waves. So what happens in a recording like this is that even though it sounds like any ordinary (busy) bowling alley, the pins sound really far away in relation to the human chatter. Late august here in the midwest is the time for the loud choruses of insects. This recording, done in the backyard of a small town, features the classic"ebb and flow and swell" of the dusk insects. Since a park is nearby, you also hear in the background the excited voices of kids playing---maybe these youngsters do realize that soon they will be back in school and that the joyous, careful time of summer play and reflection will soon be over. Recording made with my zoom h4n recorder using its built-in internal microphones. The volume was set on 80. The beautiful, simple call of the field cricket is one of my favorite insect sounds. In late summer though the huge choruses of katydids and cicadas often drown out the simple beauty of this love song. Later, as the season progresses into fall and the temps dip to where the cicadas and katydids no longer sing, these simple, beautiful field cricket calls still last up to the time that the days just can't stay warm any longer. I like to see how late into the season i can hear these guys---something just hauntingly mesmerizing hearing this sound and no other on a mild autumn day, after a cold night. . I was fortunate enough to capture this recording on september 4th 2013 in my backyard. Recording made around 4:30 in the morning with my h4n recorder using its internal built-in microphones.

Recorded at hope st radio, a bar/restaurant/radio station at collingwood yards, during the tail end of a disorganising community dinner. In this recording, about 80 people are learning or playing mah jong while the restaurant kitchen closes service and the sound system is off. There are adults and a few small children in the room and too many djs (common problem here). In-n-out, unlike other fast food chains, does not allow music in their dining rooms. This is because most in-n-out locations are so busy and constantly loud, the addition of music would create an unbearable sense of mayhem. A recording made around noon on the edge of a woods located right in the middle of a major midwestern university. Throughout this entire recording, you'll hear the everpresent hum of heating and air conditioner units running. You will also hear faint conversations and laughter of students as they walk to class, faint sounds from a nearby construction site, distant rumble of traffic, the distant droning of an airplane lazily floating through the april sky. From time to time you will also hear the well known "beep. . . Beep. . . . . Beep. . . . " of a piece of heavy equipment backing up. However, despite all of the dominating background of man and his machines, nature comes through. Sincei was sitting on the edge of a fairly large woods which sits in the center of all of the concrete and glass and steel, the sweet singing of birds lasts throughout much of this recording. Here you can hear this high-speed train come screaming through burbank's downtown station (traffic can be heard on i-5 in the distance). You will hear a security guard walk behind me just before the train comes through. He was one of our trusty transpo officers making sure i wasn't up to no good with my zoomh4n device. Zoom h4n - onboard microphones. This recording was captured in the city of orange in orange county, california. This is located just below los angeles and less than a mile from disneyland in anaheim. This is an extremely clean recording of a sudden cloudburst that turned in to a torrential downpour on december 28, 2020. The peaks are all very close to 0db. I opened the sliding glass door to our balcony and placed my zoom h4n as close as possible to the rain without destroying the recorder. What resulted is an amazingly layered rain track. This is because rain can be heard striking multiple surfaces such as a tree, a metal table, the cement balcony, etc. . . There is not much thunder (that's rare in this area) but if you need a few dramatic thunder claps they can be found at the following times one the file is downloaded. Com/equipment/diy-stereo-electret-mics-primo-em-172-capsules/this is a good example of what the capsules sound like when plugged directly into an inexpensive zoom h1 audio recorder. So far i've been pretty stunned by the performance of these capsules, which are significantly more sensitive than the built in microphones on the h1, and to my ears sound much less muddy. I'm particularly impressed by this because the capsules are running on the 2. 5v of plug-in power that the h1 delivers, which is below the minimum specs of the capsules. Even so there is remarkably little noise. I can only imagine how they would sound with a battery pack to deliver a full 5 volts!.

As our planet becomes increasingly crowded, finding a quiet, natural, tranquil place to listen to pure nature becomes harder. Even in the rural area of deep southern illinois you have to really try hard to find a place where the man-made sounds aren’t everywhere. However, i found just such a place on september 9th, 2012 at the cache river state natural area. This very peaceful recording was made at around 3:00pm in a grassy field bordering a small pond. The pure, droning sound of the insects of late summer make this soundscape almost hypnotic. If you listen closely towards the middle and end of this recording, you can hear the pleasant chipping of sparrows and the not so pleasant call of a crow off in the distance. I mounted my recorder on a small tripod literally 3 inches from the ground so my recorder was actually hidden in the grasses and goldenrods of late summer.

This is a recording i made on sunday november 4th 2012 of the gentle, droning sounds of insects that were singing in a marshy area near the shore of a small lake. This is a very typical ambiance of autumn in the southern portion of illinois. If you listen carefully, you'll hear another very typical fall sound, the cry of blue jays in the heavy woods which surround this lake. One of my favorite sound-scapes. I made this with my rugged and dependable handy zoom h4n recorder, using its built-in microphones. I literaly had it sitting on a small log only about 15 feet from the water's edge. Because the insects were not very loud, i did have to crank up my record volume to 86 on the scale of 100; this means you will hear a little bit of slight wind rumble, but all-in-all i think the recording paints a good picture of the early autumn landscape and everything slows down and winds down for the bitter winter ahead. Let me set the scene for this audio because i am a nerd. . . Burbank, california. A large apartment/condominium complex with an open courtyard and a swimming pool and hot tub. Now, for some reason in la, nobody ever seems to actually use pools or hot tubs anymore so it's not hard to get clean audio. So, from beginning to end you will basically hear me turn the automatic shutoff dial on the wall, walk to the hot tub, get in the hot tub, and sit in various positions for extended periods of time. August, 2nd 2013. About eight and a half minutes worth of summer evening ambience, with crickets and cicadas leading the evening songs. Nothing too eventful, but a nice finish to a great day. Recorded at 48khz, 24 bit. Stereo pair of behringer c-2s (cardioid). The mics have an on-board 3-position switch, with labels "flat," "low-cut," and "-10db. " the switch was set in the -10db position (whoops!). It is unclear if this position also activates the low-cut. Additionally, a 24db/oct low-cut applied in pro-tools at 80hz to clean up a slight wind ruffle. Since it was late at night, and the rest of the family was in bed, i opened my window and placed the microphones (almost) right up against the screen. The a/c unit you can hear is directly below the window. Around the 4:45 mark, the digital thermostat hit a programming mark and kicked the air conditioner back on. This recording was done on a balmy day in early november at the shore of a small lake in southern illinois. Even though it was november, i was in a short-sleeve t-shirt, because of the warm weather that we had been having. However, there was a huge, approaching mass of cold air from canada approaching which resulted in some tremendous, steady winds, gusting up to 40 miles an hour. I literally had my zoom h4n recorder sitting in some sedge-type grasses inches from the lake, which enabled me to get the clear, crisp sound of the wind-driven wages breaking over the small rocks and sticks. Occasionally you will hear a dull roar of the wind, which i was able to decrease a bit using my graphic equalizer, although as you listen to the entire piece you will notice that i just could not eliminate all of the “wind roar”,. Still, i think this is an effective, realistic sound-record of what happens when cold air hits head on with warm air over a lake. Again, this was recorded using the zoom h4n digital audio recorder, using the built-in stereo microphones. Enjoy.

Nature, and man-made machines, wake up on a saturday in a small town in southern illinois. Even though getting "away from it all" and experiencing nature in the deep woods, or a quiet field is very enjoyable, let's not forget that nature often lives and thrives side-by-side with us. I recorded this in my back yard on saturday april 27th, 2013 at 6:45 am and you'll hear the low, but everpresent low rumble of a distant train throughout. But, over and above you hear the incredible variety of calls and sounds made by a family of starlings who seem oblivious to the iron horse and the occasional car. We had rain the night before, so every now and then you hear a loud "plop" as a breeze cuts loose fat rain-drop and it hits the foam wind-screen on my h4n. Starting at around 3:47 and running to 4:08 a cardinal makes a strong appearance. I made this recording using my zoom h4n recorder, using it's internal built-in stereo microphones, with the recording gain on 81, out of 100. Enjoy!.

I made this recording of ambient backgroud noise directly beneath the eiffel tower. The shape of the eiffel tower creates a unique acoustic environment in the vicinity of the tower, especially beneath it. You can hear a much higher level of background noise than you would hear in an open area, and the noise is unusual. The tower is made of thin pieces of iron arranged into a complex and very large lattice, which reflects and slices and dices sound in a unique way. Thus you have a high level of very even and unidentifiable background noise as noises from the ground and the platform get bounced around and distorted by the structure of the tower. This recording was made from the ground, with microphones pointed straight upwards about 2 meters off the ground. Noises from the ground travel upwards and bounce around the inside of the tower, then drift back down. There are noises in the tower itself as well, such as elevator motors and people on the platforms. The first platform, at 57 meters, is open in the center, whereas the second platform, at 116 meters, is completely closed and flat on the bottom. Wind moving through the tower also makes noise, and again the open structure of the tower changes the noise in a way that is specific to the eiffel tower. There wasn't much wind at ground level for this recording, but i don't know what the wind speed was at higher levels in the tower. Some voices in multiple languages are audible in the recording, as the area beneath the tower is awash in tourists. Recorded hand-held with a zoom h4n and a mini windjammer, using built-in mics, in stereo 96 khz / 24 bits, then converted to mp3 at 320 kbps because of the size of the file. Duration is about two minutes.
