Il primo uso registrato del verde russo come nome di colore in inglese risale agli anni Trenta del XIX secolo (l'anno esatto non è certo). Il termine sembra riferirsi alla tonalità media di verde indossata dalla maggior parte dei reggimenti dell'esercito imperiale russo dal 1700 al 1914.

“Tyrian purple” è il nome inglese contemporaneo del colore che in latino è chiamato ‘purpura’. Altri nomi inglesi contemporanei di purpura sono “imperial purple” e “royal purple”. Lo stesso nome inglese “purple” denominava originariamente il colore specifico purpura. La porpora è il colore di una tintura estratta da un mollusco trovato sulle coste della città di Tiro nell'antica Fenicia (contemporaneamente in Libano), il cui colore nell'antichità classica era un simbolo di regalità e autorità politica perché solo le persone molto ricche potevano permetterselo, compresi gli imperatori romani. Per questo motivo, la porpora di Tiro era anche denominata “porpora imperiale”.
