Opening a fizzy drink can (330ml). Initial hiss / open. The opening is boomy because the mic was very close, but i didn't eq it out because it sounds quite interesting.

All i did was cleaned up the annoying ringing noise heard throughout the old version, removed some light hiss and reversed the music to go both forwards and backwards.

These cats were going nuts in the alley outside my window. The echoy, warberly sound comes from running a noise reduction function, as there was a lot of hiss in the unprocesses file.

Sound i recorded on my gas stove top of a small pot with boiling water. Recorded with rode ntg-3 shotgun on zoom6 recorder. Tried removing as much of the gas hiss in post as i could.

This is something that my on-line teacher has me playing. I took up the guitar again and even though this is a short piece it has a certain beauty to it. Thunder storm in london, it happened in the early hours so traffic noise is low. There's a little hiss from the recorder, some of it is rain though. I've uploaded the whole file, its pretty big, i can upload an mp3 if anyone needs it.

Opening the back doors: first the storm door and then the main door. Main door closes followed by the storm door. Back door has a slight squeak. Stereo recording 48khz 24bit from the top of hangman's hill in the malvern hills, uk. Recorded for world listening day 2014 on 18 july in the early afternoon. Recorded with rode nt4 and sennheiser mkh416 through sound devices 442 into tascam dr-40. Additional processing in sound forge. The nt4 had quite a lot of top end hiss that i didn't really notice until too late.

Using a variety of 1980s radios connected via a headphone output to the computer, i tuned in - across the entire bandwidth - of the mw and lw channels. I also captured the static hiss of those bands, 'dead air'. There are small clips of various stations along the way but i was looking for that 'tuning in' sound that was so familiar when radio was the central part of every teenager's life.

This is the sound of an slightly old and noisy ceiling fan being switched on, run for a bit, and then turned off. It has been recorded on my cheap android phone in an empty room in mumbai, india. This sample was created by layering short, improvised passages on a yamaha psr-275 into a boss dd-20 in sound on sound mode. Loop was played into a boss me-30 on harmonizer and pitch shifter settings, processed in real time, then faded out. Audio was further processed in goldwave (compression, added hiss, vibrato, etc. ) to give it a more believeable "old vhs tape" sound. I cut it to only include the most convincing segment of audio. Very nice clear recording with basically zero unwanted noises except for an occasional light water drip. Audio edited to perfection by me. ;) did some light eq, compression, limiting, and stereo balancing, as well as removing some of the constant ambient white noise hiss. I accidentally recorded this sequence when i left my camcorder on while filming some drawing tutorials. My warehouse style studio is in the inner city at street level opening onto a street closure/park so you will hear some faint bird tweeting in the background. Near the beginning and end there is the sound of a large industrial sliding door and the loud clanging is a drop bolt on an external metal security grill gate. Wind blown chimes add to the scene. I only applied a very low level audio clean-up using adobe soundbooth cs3 to reduce hiss.

These short files are random selections from a 9min composite audio file i put together from an accidental recording made when i left my sony camcorder on in my studio. They are part of the same series posted elsewhere on thefreesoundproject site titled "accidental recordist". There is some hiss/background noise which is part of the street front urban scene of my studio. There are two chimes - one low pitch constructed of four aluminium tubes and wooden clapper (gift) and the high pitch one of small stainless steel discs (purchased in maui from craft shop). I did some basic cleanup of low level background noise and applied plus one level of loudness using adobe soundbooth cs3 to get some clarity.

A semi-rare and priceless recording (at least to me) of a whippoorwill; a bird who, unfortunately, is declining in many areas of the country. This recording contains more hiss than many of my existing nature recordings, but i still want to post it so you can get sample of this wonderful signature sound of summer woods at dusk. This particular microphone does have a narrow acceptance angle, which is probably 1 reason for the hissiness. Still, go out in the summer woods around dusk sometime and maybe you will get lucky and hear this beautiful little bird whose distinctive calls have livened up the woods for generations of many youngsters – including me!.

Ambient sound akin to the bridge of a starship. Muted background hum with an overtone of air conditioning ducts. Pseudo-random high pitched blips occupy the soundstage. Could be used as an ambient sound loop for hi-tech / science fiction interiors such as a laboratory, a control room, or the bridge of a spacecraft. Created with two instances of flstudio 3x osc. One kicking out a pair of sinewaves plus noise for the background susurus (hum) and ventilation sound. Second 3x osc is set to produce two interfereing square waves for the blips, squeaks and buzzes. The background was notch filtered and bandpassed to mellow out the humming sound and reduce hiss. The blips were processed with flstudio equo, stereo enhance, fruity delay2 and fl pan-o-matic vst. Each blip was pasted by hand in a seemingly random but not too unpleasant pattern.

Airplane, atr 72 (at72) flying by towards airfield at 300 m altitude. Atr 72 is a plane much like the dh8d, a twin engined propeller plane. Recorded at a quiet location (maybe only some birds). Observing point: 300 m from the side of the flying route (one has to look up about 45 degrees for the plane). Speed: about 250 to 280 km/h. This is the recording as it is, recorded with zoom h2n music-capable voicerecorder. The mode of the voicerecorder was just the good old ordinary left-right stereo recording (xy) not such things as mid-side or 4 channel etc. No compression used. I may have edited out some sudden bird sounds or beeps from the camera but that's of negigible influence on the sound. There is a slight hiss from a row of trees in the distance. Feel free to use. If you're happy with the recording, it only adds to the fun i already had of it.

This sound is a 1-sample long impulse at 48 khz. It covers the whole frequency range with equal power. This is a perfect sample for exciting your guitar amp or reverb unit to capture it's impulse response (ir). You can also play it through a speaker in a reverbant room to capture it's reverb characteristics. Remember that the ir sample will be no flatter than your speaker's performance multiplied by your microphone's performance (frequency response characteristics). The sample has exaclty 1 second of silence, then the impulse, then another second of silence to ensure the impulse will be played clean and untruncated on any sound system or device. My test with ir lv2 convolution plugin have proven, that this sample has absolutely flat frequency response - convolved signal was identical to the source signal. After normalization and sample-alignment of the sound clips i have inverted the polarisatin of one of them and summed them - result was absolute silence, even no hiss was present as a result. This shows the accuracy of the convolution process and proves this sound to be perfect for sampling ir. The impusle was generated with c* dirac ladspa plugin. Created using audacity.

This is my recreation of the noise in the background of a video shot on a consumer grade minidv camcorder (a well used one). I haven't had a minidv camcorder on hand for a few years and nobody i knew would give me a recording of just tape motor noise so i went to create the noise myself. This sound is a combination of a very badly pressed dvd in my computer's drive mixed with a tone made in audacity (up one octave from the tone that the disc ended up creating), all mixed down and brought down in volume. I know it's not a prefect recreation, but i don't have a minidv camcorder on hand so this is about as good as i can get it. If anyone has access to an anechoic chamber, a fresh tape, and a well used consumer grade minidv camcorder, please get in touch with me. I'd like the real deal better than my recreation that i did in my spare time. Note on recreating the noise out of hdv camcorders. They have slightly different hardware and as such will create different bearing noise (most times, there's an extra whine on top of the familiar bearing whine heard from standard dv camcorders). I forget the exact frequency, but it's somewhere in the neighborhood of 840hz-860hz and it's a sort of sine wave, but a modest bit more jagged. You'll have to provide your own stock camcorder mic hiss as each camcorder is different (not for definite sure on sony camcorders, but canon camcorders have a pink-ish white noise in about that era).

Electro-magnetic interference from the colorino talking color identifier and light probe when held near the internal ferrite antenna on the back right of a 13-year-old boombox near the bottom of the am broadcast band, from 530 to 580 khz. You first hear the device inactive being brought near the radio. This gives a low buzz of stacato clicks. At about 00:23 the light probe button is briefly pushed, you hear a quick boop of the light probe with low light level combined with the beginning of the white noise of the device active. If you put your ear near it after you use it, you will hear a slight hiss from the audio amplifier carrier idling for about a minute after last use. On the am radio this translates to white noise. At 00:26 there is a double click and a distorted voice says black. The voice is being picked up by the am radio. 10 seconds of white noise and i press the color button again and it says black. I put something else over the color sensor and it says a few more things. At 00:51 i hold down the light probe button and try to point it at the light above my desk while still holding it close enough to the radio to pick up the emi signal. You hear a warbling tone at 00:59 as the light reaching the sensor increases and decreases in brightness depending on how it's pointed. The signal fades in and out as the device is moved around. This has all happened at 530 khz. At 01:37 i step the radio up to 580 khz where you get a stronger signal. Wibw from topeka competes with the noise throughout the rest of the file. At 01:51 you hear the distorted error beep as i press the color button without anything but air and light in front of the color sensor. It must be pressed up against the thing you want the color of, or it gets in too much ambient light and errors out with a loud protesting beep.
