Sepia (C.I. Natural Brown 9) ist ein braun- bis grauschwarzer Farbstoff, der aus dem Tintenbeutel von Tintenfischen (Sepien) gewonnen wird, die diesen als Wehrsekret einsetzen. Er wurde zum Färben von Stoffen und als Tusche zum Zeichnen verwendet. Nach diesem Farbstoff ist der Farbton Sepia (Fotografie) benannt.Heute nutzt man Sepia vor allem zum Färben von Lebensmitteln, besonders von Pasta (Schwarze Pasta, Sepia), Gebäck sowie in der Aquarellmalerei. Der Sepienfarbstoff besteht hauptsächlich aus einem grau-schwarzen Melanin, das aus Tyrosin über das 3,4-Dihydroxyphenylalanin (Dopa) hergestellt wird, sowie Spuren des gelben Farbstoffs Sepiapterin. Melanin ist ein sogenanntes Heteropolymer, das aus Dopachinon, Indol-5,6-chinon und Indol-5,6-chinoncarbonsäure im Verhältnis 3:2:1 gebildet wird. Die schwache Arzneiwirkung des Farbstoffs beruht dagegen auf dem Vorhandensein des Pteridin-Derivats Sepiapterin.

Sinopia (nach der Schwarzmeerstadt Sinope in der Türkei) ist eine rotbraune bis ockerartige Naturfarbe. Sie wurde in traditioneller Ölmalerei oder für die Skizzierung von Fresken und Mosaiken verwendet. Die rötliche Farbe geht auf Eisenoxidverbindungen zurück.Als Sinopia wird auch der Arbeitsschritt der damit ausgeführten Skizzierung der Umrisse für ein Fresko direkt auf der Wand bezeichnet. Bis zum frühen 16. Jahrhundert wurde so gearbeitet; später wurden die Skizzen mehrheitlich erst auf einem Karton festgehalten, auf dem die Umrisse dann perforiert und mit Kohlestaub auf die Wand übertragen wurden (Spolvero).

Das Grau ist eine Nichtfarbe, bzw. eine unbunte Farbe, die keinen oder nur einen geringen farbigen Anteil besitzt. Grau kann aus Schwarz und Weiß gemischt werden. Ist eine buntfarbige Komponente enthalten oder sind ausschließlich bunte Farben gemischt, spricht man von farbigem Grau. Grautöne zeigen damit eine Unmenge an unbunten und bunten Nuancen. Grautöne mit den Bezeichnungen Neutralgrau und Reingrau enthalten keinen Farbstich, Feldgrau, Kaltgrau oder Warmgrau umfassen leicht farbige Nuancen. Abstufungen zwischen reinem Weiß und reinem Schwarz (Schwarz-Weiß-Skala) werden als Graustufen bezeichnet.Ein Prozent der Deutschen wählt Grau als Lieblingsfarbe. Es sind fast ausschließlich Männer, die von Beruf Steinmetz oder Informatiker sind.
