El primer uso registrado del verde ruso como nombre de color en inglés fue en la década de 1830 (año exacto incierto). El término parece referirse al tono medio de verde usado por la mayoría de los regimientos del Ejército Imperial Ruso desde 1700 hasta 1914.

«Tyrian purple» es el nombre inglés contemporáneo del color que en latín se denomina “purpura”. Otros nombres ingleses contemporáneos del púrpura son «imperial purple» y «royal purple». El propio nombre inglés «purple» denominaba originalmente el color específico purpura. El púrpura es el color de un tinte extraído de un molusco encontrado en las costas de la ciudad de Tiro, en la antigua Fenicia (actualmente en el Líbano), cuyo color en la Antigüedad clásica era símbolo de realeza y autoridad política porque sólo los muy ricos podían permitírselo, incluidos los emperadores romanos. Por ello, el púrpura tirio también se denominaba «púrpura imperial».
