I heard a strong sounding grasshopper in a neighbor's busch i run into my house and picked up my recorder and mic and run out tried coming closest possible for good sound, but it was a little too close because the hopper become silent. From frederick noad's book: 'idiots guide to playing the guitar. ' noad plays it so beautifully, i could never match him, but i just wanted to try it with the electric instead. Recorded with my squire tele and squire bass into the focusrite interface. The guitar went through the walrus slo pedal on 'dream' setting with editing done in reaper. (shout out to kenny gioia for the tips). Bass was run through my behringer bxl 1800 bass amp and through the interface. Both instruments were triple tracked. This is the sound of a sheet metal that is under high tension, hitting it with a small key produced a laser fire type of sound. Recorded using a contact mic as the area is surrounded by a lot of noise, the contact mic cut out everything. The recording was taken at my place of work so it would be easy should anyone require the "shots" to be re-recorded at a different tempo. 96khz 24bit mono-mix.

An Edison "Perfected" Phonograph cylinder recording of The Lost Chord (composed 1877) by Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900), played on piano and cornet. One of the earliest surviving recordings of music; was played at the press conference that introduced the phonograph to London on August 14 1888. Cuts off slightly before the ending of the song. The recorded version is somewhat abridged (a middle section has been cut, possibly due to time constraints). Overall a well-preserved example of wax cylinder recording technology. Length: 2:07

The sequences are intended to be heard on a computer sound card, and do not include system exclusive messages or controllers other than volume, pan, reverb and chorus. They are all in the public domain. That is, they are no-one's intellectual property: they may be freely copied, adapted, tinkered with and, I hope, surpassed by others.

A slinky spring toy stretched out and plucked once from the end, recorded with a zeppelin design labs cortado impedance-matched piezo contact microphone. The resulting recording is a classic spring-based sci-fi "laser sound" with a massive, lengthy, rumbling decay tail. This was recorded at 24 bit 96 khz. In addition to its use as a sound effect, this waveform works well inside a convolution reverb as an offbeat spring reverb impulse response, provided one has the processor power and ram to support a 2 minute 13 second convolution. The cortado's bass response is exceptionally large for a contact mic, so high pass filtering may be desired if used as an impulse response.

Late august here in the midwest is the time for the loud choruses of insects. This recording, done in the backyard of a small town, features the classic"ebb and flow and swell" of the dusk insects. Since a park is nearby, you also hear in the background the excited voices of kids playing---maybe these youngsters do realize that soon they will be back in school and that the joyous, careful time of summer play and reflection will soon be over. Recording made with my zoom h4n recorder using its built-in internal microphones. The volume was set on 80. Enjoy, and maybe you too can use this sound-file for your own meditation, or simply thinking and taking stock of the accomplishments and blessings during the outdoor seasons and comfortably contemplate the upcoming dark, and bare and gray seasons ahead.
