The lightning occured ~167 meters away from the microphone, calculated from the time lapse between the initial dc spike and the start of audible strike. A recording made february 24th, 2019 in a residential section of a small midwestern town. . . The stiff north winds are rattling the remaining dry leaves. . . You will also hear the subtle singing of the birds that always greet you in late winter. . . Birds like house sparrows and starlings. From time to time, you'll hear the tinkly, nice sound of some wind-chimes hanging on the front porch of some house. The florida grand prix runs every spring in the waterfront streets of st. Petersburg florida. I was standing in a blocked off street (so i wouldn't get run over) about 500 feet from the passing grand prix cars. These were the trial runs on friday, march 28, 2014. It's a 3 day event that attracts tens of thousands of race enthusiasts each year. This is the first event of the annual national series and it's said to be the favorite street course with race drivers. Recorded with a mono long shotgun microphone, then converted to a stereo file in adobe audio.

Checked-in to a hotel in raleigh, north carolina with my wife to catch a flight early the next morning out of rdu. A late summer soundscape that is a favorite of mine. . Microphones set up in some mature woods about 60 feet from a large lake on labor day weekend. Most of the background is the insects, which are very obvious during this time of year. The swelling of their volume is nap-inducing (*at least to me in my opinion. )here is the midwest this swelling and subsiding of the insect wave tells me that summer is just about starting to go back downhill, after a feverish peak. Despite the covid-19 of the year, nature does not seem to have changed her soundscape. Life goes on in the forests. The birds, whose job of raising young is over, are still there. . . They're just resting and relaxing and listening to the insects as well i'm sure. Now of course you will hear a few prominent birds in this captured moment:(1) a great blue heron squawks out starting at 1:17 into this piece. (2) the alarm call of a red-headed woodpecker can be heard at 2:14. Other than that, just the insects singing their hearts out and the assortment of birds taking secondary place during this time of year. Coffee at the cottage. Started a olympus ls-10 + cheap old sony microphone, then proceeded to load the auto-drip coffee machine with coffee grounds, 4 cups of water and hit the brew button. Then, took out the old toaster, put a leftover waffle from yesterday's breakfast in, and toasted while the coffee was brewing. Various sounds accompanied with this ritual. . . Coffee maker and toaster sounds. Unscrewing and replacing the top to the nutella jar. Squeaky old oak floors of this 90 year old house making noise while i walk around. Water running, old clock on the wall ticking etc.

On many days i take a two mile walk from my house to my job. One gorgeous day i took my zoom h1 and sampled audio at various points during this walk. To avoid footsteps, i recorded each location standing still. In this file i gradually crossfade between the different locations. The walk begins on a suburban street, goes past a park where children are playing baseball, then a busy intersection, then a factory with open windows. A couple planes can be heard overhead. Imagine a warm, damp-humid august evening in the midwest. It's about 8pm and you're in a mowed path which is 10 feet wide. On either side of you, are two fields of tall -- 9 feet --- corn standing like green, thick grassy sentinels. This is where i was when i recorded this hypnotic sound-scape on saturday night august 9th 2014. I made this recording with my marantz pmd661 (modified by oade brothers electronics)in stereo using twin, matched samson co2 microphones mounted on my tripod about 5 feet above the ground. My record volume was 6 1/2.

A summer morning field recording at newport lakes reserve, a former bluestone quarry and rubbish tip in the western melbourne suburb of newport. The area is now a vast suburban park with a native nursery and twin human-made lakes, popular with many species of birds and people. I really enjoy hearing these calls because, while beautiful in their own right, they also signify the soon-to-be summer coming to a close. Recording made on august 6, 2022 at about 2pm in a clearing surrounded byseveral dozen black walnut trees, and, beyond those, thick, midwestern, insect-laden summer woods. An enjoyable, reflective soundscape of kids playing and swinging and laughing in a park in a small, midwestern usa town. This was recorded at 1:30 in the afternoon on a beautiful, mild november day in 2020. Very pleasing to listen to, and probably helps to bring back memories of your own, warm childhood memories. Even though covid-19 is causing a huge problem all over the world, i find it very soothing and comforting knowing, despite the pandemic, kids are still doing what they've been doing since, well, forever, playing and laughing and having the care-free fun time of their life. Recording of a door being opened and closed, and then opened and closed again. Very slight footsteps (on carpet) can be heard. The microphone (sennheiser mkh-50) was intentionally placed about 5 feet away from the door so as to capture some of the natural room sound/reverb (which is very subtle). In this sample you hear a recording from inside a well sound insulated room, directly under the roof of a house. Strong rain hints the roof and produces low frequency muted sounds. In the background you hear the constant noise of the rain, coming through the window. There are also a few raindrops hitting the glass of the window. The sample was recorded using the built-in stereo microphone of a zoom h4n recorder. It was slightly processed to remove unwanted low and high frequencies which were not related to the actual recording. This wood thrush was recorded around 7:30 in the morning in heavy woods in deep southern illinois. Unlike my earlier posting of the wood thrush singing at dusk, this morning recording has the wood thrush singing with lots of company, although he clearly rises above his neighbors. 17 seconds into the recording you hear the drumming of a woodpecker, and at one-minute 20 seconds into the recording you hear the distinctive-lonely sounding call of the huge pileated woodpecker. Recording made with good-quality stereo microphones so use headphones to get a wonderful experience.

A recording i made in may of 2013 as i was trying to get a good recording of the wonderful wood thrush recorded. You can still faintly hear the wood thrush in the background, but the nice surprise on this recording is the very clear, bubbling, trilling call of a proud little chipping sparrow. This recording was carefully made using my homemade parabolic reflector microphone. (*using my trusty rode ntg-2), and going into my handy zoom h4n recorder. I wanted to get as accurate a recording as possible so i bumped up the bit rate to 96 kpbs. I know it makes for a larger file, but i think it is worth it.

Third in a series of 3 consecutive recordings of the sound of summer birdsong in a suburban english setting. This one prominently features the sound of water flushing through an outside kitchen drain into an alleyway. Common suburban evening birdsong can be heard clearly throughout with distant traffic noise in the background. Recorded on a summer evening in june 2016 in southern england using a rode nt-4 microphone in a rycote lyre shock mount, marantz pmd661 and edited using adobe audition.

This recording, encoded in vbr format, is one hour and 44 minutes long. Like the other recordings in this sound pack, the mother cat and her kittens are inside a nesting box in the garage. A small stereo microphone (olympus me51s) was placed inside the brooding area. After editing, they were exported to mp3 format. Sounds include mewing, purring, shuffling, and nursing. Some occasional heartbeats may be heard as the mother cat or kittens move inside. Other sounds include a rooster crowing, and people working outside, and some occasional people talking in the background. At this stage, the kittens are in week 3 of their life.

Long recording of an intense new england thunderstorm, recorded through an open window with a portable minidisc recorder and attached sony condenser microphone. The first ~18:45 is relatively quieter (and cleaner), though there are several good thunder rolls at ~1:20, 4:00, and 14:10. After 18:45 the storm picks up and the recording is correspondingly louder, and the storm goes a bit crazy -- there are many very loud thunder rolls, though unfortunately there is also some clipping and distortion. From 24:00 through the end of the recording, the storm winds down and the recording level is just right to pick up a number of very clean but loud thunder rolls, with some nice stereo separation.

I took a very fast recording of someone hitting some orchestral chimes, slowed it down by over 200% and added some harmonic excitement and equalization in post production. This was recorded on tuesday may 24th, 2016 using the marantz pmd661 and two sennheiser me66 microphones. . . True stereo recording. You will hear the delightful sound of neighborhood kids playing a friendly - or sometimes not so friendly - game of wiffleball which adds to the reflective nature of this recording. The trilling bird calling towards the end of the recording is the beautiful little, rusty-capped chipping sparrow. These chipping sparrows converge on the midwest around this time and their calls can be mistaken as an insect. A 4-minute. Wav recording of an apartment parking lot in a small neighborhood with a busy nearby roadway - from a different perspective. Cars can be heard driving by, along with a faint humming with from some machinery and a small amount of wind. There is also some faint talking, laughing and coughs from a group in one of the apartment buildings, which can add to the effect. There are two instances when cars drive into the parking lot (about at 3:20 and 3:40), and shortly afterward a person walks by the mic. Recorded with the microphone of a nikon coolpix camera.

This was recorded in the centre of oxford, near the junction between broad street and turl street, on 23rd february 2013. I was facing west along broad street with turl street, and the pavement, to my left. There are many different sounds on this recording including bikes being parked (i was standing near a bike rack) and ridden, cars lurking for a parking space, dropping people off and turning round (broad street has a car park in the middle of it), plenty of different people walking past and talking, and a big issue seller. There is the occasional bit of wind noise, but not as much as i'd feared (luckily the wind was behind me). Recorded with a marantz pmd661 with built-in microphones.

I have been hearing an animal or two beneath my bathtub for some time now. Today i discovered who it was. Leaving my apartment building this afternoon, i saw a cat sized racoon carrying her baby under the walkway. I went back inside and set up a microphone aimed at the floor by my bathtub. Methodology: shure sm58 into focusrite and recorded via ableton. Noise removed in audacity. I have a horrendous ground loop situation. In the future i may try to mic from below the apartment so that it isn't so muffled by the floor. Some noise comes from how much i had to amplify the signal to make it heard.

This recording was taken from the balcony of an apartment in johor bahru malaysia on september 30th 2022 at about 1:30pm. It was monsoon season but not raining and the weather was hazy and muggy. The recording features the drone of a busy city punctuated by a whippersnipper, a building site, birds, a light aeroplane and car horns. At around the 4:30 mark there's two loud motorcycles that race each other and echo around the city in a most glorious way. The recording was made with the inbuilt stereo microphones of a zoom h5 portable recorder.

A recording of, to me at least, is the symbolic sound of the later summer woods, when the blue jays become more vocal. These beautiful birds stay here in southern illinois all year long, and are a welcome flash of color and blue crest once autumn begins arriving. Now, i have always thought this call of the blue jay is not the prettiest or melodic at all; in fact, hearing the call of a blue jay can be a bit unnerving. . . But, to me, it is symbolic of the " wild " ness of nature. . . One of my most melancholy nature sound. . . A nice ambient recording made on sunday morning may 5th 2013 around 6:30 in the morning in the shawnee national forest in deep southern illinois. I had originally wanted to get good, clear recordings of the tremendous numbers of warblers that are here, but a good, soaking steady light rain decided to stick around. I though, what the heck, that is a part of our natural world also, so let's get it all "on tape". . . . Hope you enjoy this. To keep as much water off of my h4n as possible, i put one of my big, furry, knitted insulated sock-cap over the recorder, that at least kept my recorder from swimming in water.

The pretty, soothing, trilling song of the pine warbler. These callings were recorded on sunday march 30th 2014 in a small pine grove, in the middle of a larger forest. On the day i recorded this, the weather was perfectly sunny, and mild -- temps about 60 degrees -- with very little wind. When i first heard this song, i was instantly reminded of a sewing machine. Without the foam wind-screen the recording would simply have been an obnoxious, unintelligable roar!also, since the waves were so loud to begin with, i did not have to crank the recording gain real high -- i had the gain only on 65 for this recording. .
