Distant sirens in the last half of the recording. Some distant traffic noise, and a couple of cars passing close. I didn't notice until afterwards that i had the recorder set in mp3 format. This piece is a sound-sculpture of a weather effect commonly called the beast from the east in the uk. It is based on a longer piece by me called frozen kaos. This was constructed by me using only copywrite free sources of sounds, musical(ish) pieces and natural sounds. All of these were assembled and processed using the free software package audacity™. Most samples have been filtered, pitched, and manipulated vastly to make the basic foundation. On that base all the rest of the sounds were layer (over 200 different layers -- manipulated, mixed down, rebuilt, remixed, manipulated). I mostly work be happenstance and never take notes -- often what comes about is as much by chance as by design.

I was fooling around with audacity and created this neat little sound. I have no clue how to lower the volume, and really, i mean it: this thing is loud. I keep my volume at 10% and i couldn't even listen to this thing with my headphones. I have tried to lower the volume (so that it doesn't hurt the ears) but to no avail. If you by chance know how (in audacity) then feel free to tell me in the comments and i'll re-upload a non-deafening version. If you use it i don't mind at all, though i am curious, if you do use it, what you'll use it for. Either way, i don't mind, but i'm curious by nature.

Note: the high-pitched squeaks are artifacts from freesound's preview and aren't present in the actual recording. 10 minutes of a thunderstorm, recorded september 7th, 2019 from my apartment window in seattle. This is the raw recording straight from my zoom h5. Levels were kept low to minimize the chance of clipping. A few thunder sounds were still too loud, but luckily the h5 has a backup function that recorded an identical track 12 db quieter. I've uploaded that as well, so you can splice the two together to taste. Eventually i'll release a processed version with the two combined, plus compression and eq, but i wanted to upload the source material in case you'd prefer to diy it.

Pine cones dropping and landing on a bed of pine needles. This recording was made on a windy day, so there is some background "whooshing" wind; all in all, i think these pine cones softly landing on the needles can be put to good use. Recording made with my zoom h4n recorder, with a rode ntg-2 shotgun microphone. For this recording i literally wanted to get as close as i could, so i placed the shotgun microphone on the ground and carefully let the pine cones fall as close to the microphone as possible, but without hitting it. *not easy to do. Patch walkthrough. The patch starts with the qu-bit chance providing discrete random values (sample and hold) going into an instruo harmonaig. This takes the stepped random voltages and quantizing them to a given scale. I put in the notes c d eb f g ab bb which is a c natural minor scale, the relative minor of eb major (for anyone that's curious). However like most of my modular work i didn't actually tune the oscillators to anything specific. So treat the scale as a pattern of intervals not a set of specific notes. The quantized notes then form 4 voice chords giving us a root, third, fifth and seventh cv output that will be diatonic following the scale pattern, meaning the third will be major or minor, the seventh major, minor or dominant and the fifth natural or diminshed to suit the scale. With the 4 quantized outputs on the harmonaig these all go into the four oscillators on the synthesis technology e370 quad morphing vco. Each of the e370 oscillators are in the basic morph xy mode using the built in rom b set of wavetables. Wavetables are modulating by various mixes of the befaco rampage, mutable instruments tides, wmd multimode envelopes and music thing modular turing machine. The modulation sources are mixed and split with multiples and mixers. These modulating wavetables then go into a bubblesound vca4p where i'm using 4 mk1 intellijel dixie oscillators all un-synced and free running with sine wave lfos. Each lfo freely fades the voice in and out of the vca4p. As this is unsynced there's no regard to pitch changes linked to changes in amplitude and the swells. I find splitting the gate/rhythm from pitch regarding sequencing to be a freeing and interesting way to work that's not available on traditional instruments. This is just a simple application of that idea with the lfos fading freely unrelated to the other modulation or sequencing of pitch. The sound then goes from the vca4p mix out into a befaco mixer and praxis snake charmer which the output section of the larger case and i'm sending a 'pre' auxiliary out into my fx case. The dry sound first goes into the erica synths fusion delay / flanger vintage ensemble which is giving me short modulated delays giving vibrato like sounds and pushing the input level and overdrive gives us some warmth and grit that thickens up the sound and also fills in the gaps left by the free running lfos pulling quieter sounds and compressing in the on board tube. This then outputs to the feedback 1 bit multitap delay module which has it's delay chip pushed to longer times for some added crackle and noise. I'm using the two delay taps for a shorter and longer delay with little feedback to mix the dry sound for a generally noisier and smeared version of the input. This then goes into the xaoc devices kamieniec with it's on board lfo as slow as possibly for a mildly resonant phase shifting. This goes into mutable instruments clouds set to sew random grains slowly and randomly which are pitch shifted up 2 octaves to fill out some high end flourishes against the closed chord voicings at the core of the patch. Finally this goes into a long lush reverb from the halls of valhalla card in the tiptop audio z-dsp. The stereo fx chain and the mono dry signal are mixed in the befaco hexmix and recorded as a mixed stereo file. I'd consider this to be the main 'reel'. However i split the dry signal and the fx only wet stereo signal and recorded those at the same time so you can choose which reel to use and experiment with dry/wet or blended sounds from this patch.

I recorded these spring peepers in upstate ny on march 18, 2022 in a wetland area. Spring peepers are small tree frogs. They are rarely seen, but during mating season in the spring, they are often heard. They are generally about one inch (2. 5 centimeters) in length, or about the length of a paper clip, and their weight averages from 0. 11 to 0. 18 ounces (3 to 5 grams). Spring peepers are known for the males’ mating call—a high-pitched whistling or peeping sound repeated about 20 times a minute. However, the faster and louder they sing, the greater the chances of attracting a mate. They often congregate near water and sing in trios, with the deepest-voiced frog starting the call. They begin breeding early in the spring and call on warm spring nights and during the day in rainy or cloudy weather. Females lay their eggs in vernal pools, ponds, and other wetlands where fish are not present. A female may lay anywhere from 750 to 1,200 eggs, which attach to submerged aquatic vegetation. Males fertilize the eggs as they are laid. Depending on the temperature, eggs can hatch within two days to two weeks. The tadpoles have gills to breathe underwater and tails to help them swim. Tadpoles transform into frogs over the course of 6 to 12 weeks. Spring peepers are said to have short lives, living three to four years at most.
