I made this wonderful recording in july 2011 at about 9:00 at night on a hot, muggy july evening. This is the time of year when the insect chorus can get very, very loud. The haunting call of the pileated woodpecker, the largest woodpecker in the united states. It's quite an experience to hear this loud, rattling call break the stillness of the peaceful woods. You can also tell these beautiful birds around by looking for fairly large, rectangular holes in the trees. Recorded with my zoom h4n recorder and using the internal, built-in microphones. This is a recording made in the room of my apartment in italy in the province of rieti while i was trying my new drone that i have for a few days, "dji phantom 4 pro". This recording was done with the digital stereo microphone connected to my iphone 12 pro. I notice that in this recording, at first there is some wind noise caused by the drone itself.

This particular microphone does have a narrow acceptance angle, which is probably 1 reason for the hissiness. Still, go out in the summer woods around dusk sometime and maybe you will get lucky and hear this beautiful little bird whose distinctive calls have livened up the woods for generations of many youngsters – including me!.
